Eminem “Lose Yourself” Urban USA…………………. These styles of music evolved in the 1970s in New York and Los Angeles. Black youth started to mix rhythms melodies from existing records and then add poetry about their lives on the streets. The lyrics of their records are often confrontational and competitive, and most of them deal with modern social problems. Eminem is one of the few successful white artists in this type of music.

Shania Twain “You’re Still the One” Rural USA………………………… This type of music developed in the 1920s from the folk music of the midwestern state of the USA, and it has a distinct ‘cowboy’ feel to it. Nashville, Tennessee, is one of the official home of this type of music, and it is still growing in popularity today. Garth Brooks, one of its top artists, has sold over 100 million albums, and is the most popular solo artist of all time. In recent years Shania Twain has given this music a stylish modern look.

2 Bob Marley “No Woman No Cry” Jamaica………………………..

Popular music is a key part of every day life in Jamaica, even forming a part of the island’s Rastafarian religion. Its superstar was Bob Marley who came to world recognition in 1970s and 80s, and today Jamaican music has evolved into ‘dancehall’, an electronic form of dance music.

Enya “Orinoco Flow” Ireland……………… Irish folk music has evolved over hundreds of years and relies on the voice and traditional instruments such as the harp, violin, drum and whistle. The two different sides of Irish music are energetic dance music and haunting ballads with lyrics that tell a story. Enya, from country Donegal, came to fame in the 1990s. Her melodic vocals keep the traditional Irish feel to her songs, but she uses electronic synthesizers widely too.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo “Rain, Rain, Beautiful Rain” South Africa…………………………….. Black South African miners, forced to work far away from home, developed style of competitive, unaccompanied singing to help pass their days. Ladysmith Black Mambazo, a choir who sing in this style and who took their name from their hometown of Ladysmith, came to international notice in the 1980s. Their music maintains the traditional African singing style and uses lyrics with a religious theme, sometimes in their native Zulu language and sometimes in English.

5.Completing the ideas. A letter from a fan. 1. Work in groups. Discuss the following questions. Which famous people do you admire? What do they do? Have you ever belonged to a fan club? Have you ever written a fan letter to anyone who you admire? 2. Read the fan letter written to an actor called Zubin Varla, who played the role of Judas Iscariot in Jesus Christ Superstar. What is the aim of each paragraph. Discuss possible endings for each one.

Introduction Paragraph 1 When you describe someone’s physical Name of the person when, appearance you start with the general where and how you first met features (i. e. height, built, age) and him / her. move on to the more specific ones, such as hair, eyes, nose. You can also add a Main Body description of the clothes the person likes to wear. Paragraph 2 When you describe someone’s personal Physical appearance qualities you should support your (facial features and clothes) description with examples and / or justifications. You can also describe Paragraph 3 someone’s personality through their Personal qualities and mannerism by: justification(s) / examples referring to the way they speak; describing the gestures they use; Paragraph 4 mentioning a particular habit. Ruslana Lyzhychko is a Ukrainian pop singer who won the PARA 1 Eurovision Song Contest in 2004 with her Wild Dances. ………... Ruslana is quite pretty. She’s tall and slim, with olive skin and ………... long dark hair. She has a great sense of style, so she always looks well PARA 2 ………... dressed even in casual clothes. She’s never at arrest; she is always on the move, meeting people, while she moves from place to place.
