Role Title: Social Networker - Giving Nature a Home in Cardiff (GNAH Cardiff)

Where: RSPB Cymru HQ, Cardiff / Home-based

When: You will need to write weekly regular posts on a weekly basis – number of posts/tweets/blogs varying depending on the project activities.

Why We Want GNAH Cardiff is an exciting new pilot project, delivered in partnership with the City of Cardiff You: Council that aims to inspire young people and their families to get outside and enjoy wildlife in their gardens, school grounds, parks and the green-spaces of Cardiff. We want more young people and their families spending more time outdoors, developing a connection with nature and taking action to save it.

We’re looking for a natural storyteller, who loves social networking, to help us promote GNAH Cardiff via our Facebook and Twitter pages, and the We Love Wales blog. By raising awareness of the project you can help to turn Cardiff’s gardens and schools into havens for our flapping, fluttering, buzzing burrowing, snuffling and slithering neighbours.

We want your help to generate a bank of high quality, engaging media coverage, images and video footage that will inspire children, families and schools to take part in our mission to Give Nature a Home in Cardiff.

What’s In It For Join our growing team of GNAH Cardiff volunteers, they’re a great bunch, and are all You: enthusiastic about exploring and protecting the natural world. You’ll also work with a variety of people across the RSPB and our Cardiff Council partners, as well as other external partners we meet along the way.

Your interaction with children and families across Cardiff will play an important part in helping to spark an interest and curiosity that could last a lifetime. As a result, you’ll help transform green spaces across Cardiff, as children and families create their very own homes for wildlife. Your promotion will also help the RSPB grow support for nature on a wider scale.

You’ll get to spend time achieving all of this at a variety of beautiful locations across Cardiff, from local parks, schools and events. It’s a great way to experience some of the amazing wildlife that Cardiff has to offer.

You’ll get involved in shaping how the project uses social networking to promote our events and activities. Plus the chance to help us grow and develop our pages for our followers through making best use of this technology. You’ll be a key voice in meetings and work in project teams that look to increase our social media presence and develop the project as a whole.

This is a great opportunity for someone interested in learning how the work of a charity is supported by social media platforms. You’ll get the chance to use and develop communication, writing and photography skills, and learn about the RSPB and our brand values.

The Skills / Talents You’ll need experience in social networking and be an enthusiastic user of Facebook and You’ll Need: Twitter.

You’ll be a team player, involving yourself in our events programme, at the same time as thinking about ways to help us communicate on a wide scale and promote the project. You’ll also be able to work independently, using your own initiative to suggest stories to cover and ideas to explore in taking the project forward.

You’ll have a friendly manner and good communication skills, enabling you to communicate with all different types of people.

You’ll be organised and have experience using Microsoft office systems.

You’ll have an enthusiasm for wildlife and conservation and be keen to share this with others.

Notes: Full training and uniform for the outdoors will be provided, and any expenses incurred for travel costs whilst volunteering will be reimbursed.

Following a project induction and RSPB brand training, you’ll be responsible for using your own initiative to write and upload regular weekly posts onto our social media outlets. You’ll have support from RSPB staff who can help develop your skills and work with you to promote the project as much as possible.

We’ll also need you to commit to attending events, meetings and training several weeks in advance.

As a volunteer you’ll be joining an active and exciting conservation charity, the largest in Europe! RSPB is also the UK Partner of Birdlife International. We work for a healthy environment rich in birds and wildlife and rely on the support and generosity of volunteers to make a difference.

RSPB’s Giving Nature a Home in Cardiff programme is delivered in partnership with Cardiff Council and generously supported by Tesco plc customers through the Welsh Government’s carrier bag levy.
