When Telling Time, We Use the Verb ESSERE to Be

Che ora è?/Che ore sono? These are the two ways to ask, “What time is it?

When telling time, we use the verb ESSERE – to be.

A. The verb è is used in three cases only: È mezzogiorno. - It’s noon (12 pm). È mezzanotte. - It’s midnight (12 am). È l’una. - It’s 1:00.

B. Sono le is used for all other times of the day: Sono le due. - It’s 2:00. Sono le quattro. - It’s 4:00. Sono le undici. - It’s 11:00.

C. The hour and minutes are separated by a virgola rather than due punti. 1,00 4,15, 7,25

D. When expressing a time on the hour/on the dot, use in punto. Sono le otto in punto.- It’s 8:00 on the dot. È l’una in punto. - It’s exactly 1:00.

E. When expressing a time after the hour : the hour + e + the minute Sono le tre e venti. - It’s 3:20. Sono le nove e dieci. - It’s 9:10.

ATTENZIONE! è means is; e means and.

F. When referring to fifteen minutes before or after the hour (a quarter of an hour), use un quarto. Sono le due e un quarto. - It’s 2:15. Sono le sette e un quarto. - It’s 7:15.

G. When referring to thirty minutes after the hour, we use e mezza, NOT trenta. Sono le tre e mezza. - It’s 3:30. È mezzogiorno e mezza. - It’s 12:30

H. In Italian, you can go up to 59 minutes after the hour using e. Sono le dieci e cinquanta. - It’s 10:50. However, when the time is approaching the next hour, it is more common to jump to the next hour, subtract the number of minutes from the next hour, and use meno. next hour + meno + minutes until the next hour

It’s10:50. (11 o’clock -10 mins) - Sono le undici meno dieci. It’s 7:45. (8 o’clock – 15 mins) - Sono le otto meno quindici. (8 o’clock – ¼ hour) - Sono le otto meno un quarto.

Attenzione! Non si dice meno trenta o meno mezza!!!

J. The 24 hour clock is used to distinguish times on timetables for schedules (trains, bus), or business hours. It is not used in everyday speech. Subtract 12 from the number to find out what time it is in the afternoon or evening. 22,10 - Sono le dieci e dieci di sera. - It’s 10:10 pm.

K. When expressing at what time something happens, use a, all’, or alle and NOT È, or Sono le. Ho la lezione d’italiano all’una e ventiquattro. - I have Italian at 1,24.
