COURSE GUIDELINES
COURSE: CHEMISTRY INSTRUCTOR: MRS. ROXSTROM TEXT/E-TEXT: CHEMISTRY (Pearson Education, Inc.) PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Biology I, or Physical Science (grade of “C” or better), and successful completion of Algebra I (grade of “C” or better) INTRODUCTION: This school year is one I look forward to. Your children are what make it all worthwhile and I hope you will be just as involved in your child’s education as I am! This chemistry course is an introductory study of the nature of matter and its chemical and physical transformation. An emphasis is placed on fundamental laws and principles, elements, compounds and simple chemical reactions. The course also examines chemical theory in the context of familiar phenomena. Theories are tested and evaluated in the laboratory. A math assessment test will be given and used to determine whether student is appropriately placed for success in this class. CLASS RULES: 1. Be IN your seat ready to work when the tardy bell rings. 2. Seat changes during class with teacher permission only. 3. Respect each other, and equipment. 4. Turn in ALL work neatly, with FULL NAME, and ON TIME. NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED. 5. Bring ALL materials to class daily, and use time wisely. 6. No food, gum, hats or electronic devices! Drinks are okay. ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS: The student’s academic grade is based on percent totals from in-class worksheets, activities, notebook, homework, tests, class participation, and any quizzes. There will usually be homework every night. This would include online worksheets, review questions, text reading, lab write-ups, and studying notes or vocabulary. Much of the work is graded online, with student questions answered during class. This is a college preparatory class, and any academic misconduct is unacceptable! Please read the enclosed Academic Code of Conduct CAREFULLY. The letter grade is based on the following weighted percentage of the total points: 90 - 100+ = A 80 - 89 = B 70 - 79 = C 60 - 69 = D 0 - 59 = F Each of the quarter grades will be weighted in the following manner: Participation/Effort/student preparedness (regular homework) = 10% Chapter Reviews = 20% Labs = 20% Tests = 50% The full semester grade will be an average of the two quarters as follows: Semester 1 Course Work = 90% Semester 1 Final Exam (Dec) = 10% Semester 2 Course Work = 90% Semester 2 Final Exam (May) = 10% Bonus is available, but will not be accepted from students having more than three missing assignments during each quarter. MATERIALS: The student is expected to have the following materials by the end of the first week of school: a science notebook (at least a 1 ½” to 2” three-ring binder), a basic scientific calculator, earphones/earbuds for laptop, a pen (black or navy blue pen for written assignments) two sharpened pencils (or a mechanical pencil with extra lead), highlighters, , white lined paper (no colored paper accepted), and index cards. All semester finals are open notebook!!! MAKE-UP WORK: I accept make-up work for excused absences only (unexcused absences, and suspensions will receive zeros). The student will have two days for every day of excused absence to complete their missing work, up to one week of time (school guidelines). Since students have laptops, all attempts to complete online assignments at home must be made. The day the student returns to school counts as the first day of the two. The term “Excused” pertains to a FULL DAY of absence. IF you are missing only my class, but are on campus for any portion of the school day, your work is still due! If you are participating in a school- sponsored event, you are responsible to complete all work ahead of time, and turn it in on the day it is due, or earlier. Students have prior knowledge for these events (sports, on-campus testing, field trips, etc), and must be responsible for getting all work done! In the case of an excused absence, tests and labs must be made up within ONE week (schedule with Ms. Roxstrom), or they will receive a zero.
CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE: The student will abide by ALL posted classroom rules, and obey ALL instructions given by the teacher - whether written or verbal. Should you choose to disregard classroom rules, the school-wide discipline system will be followed. Students may also receive in-class detention and/or phone calls home for repeatedly poor classroom behavior. Horsing around on a lab day will be cause for IMMEDIATE removal from the classroom, and a zero grade on the lab.
INTERNET HELP! In addition to text links, students will have access to many other chemistry/science sites as given by Ms. Roxstrom. A simple search with the key word “chemistry” will uncover hundreds of links. Homework reminders by text message can be gotten by signing up for REMIND 101. You do this by sending the message “@msrox” to the number “81010”. Ms. Roxstrom can also be reached by e-mail at the following address: [email protected] If you have any questions, please feel free to call the school at 256-5020, Ext. 403, and leave me a message. I will return your call at my earliest possible convenience. Thank you for your time! Regards, Ms. S. Roxstrom
(Please return only this page for Ms. Roxstrom’s Chemistry Class. Keep the remaining portion of the packet in your notebook!)
I have read and understand all that is required of me in Ms. Roxstrom’s Chemistry class. I will abide by all the rules posted and all rules explained to me. I also understand that if I violate any of the lab safety rules discussed in class, I will be IMMEDIATELY sent to the office with a referral. If I break any lab equipment THROUGH NEGLIGENCE or HORSEPLAY, I will personally pay for the cost of replacement after receiving an itemized bill from Ms. Roxstrom.
