Am I eligible to register to vote in Vermont?

You can vote in Vermont if you are a citizen of the United States and a resident of the Vermont town in which you apply to be added to the checklist. You must take, or have previously taken, the Voter’s Oath; and you must be 18 years of age or older on or before the day of election.

How do I register to vote and is there a deadline to register?

Complete the application for Addition to the Checklist. You must include your Vermont Driver’s License Number or Vermont Non-Driver’s Identification Number. If you do not have a Vermont Driver’s License Number or a Non-Driver’s Identification Number, include the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number. If you come into the Town Office to register, please bring your driver’s license with you. The voter registration deadline is 5 PM on the Wednesday prior to the election. You can check your voter status and register to vote at https://mvp.sec.state.vt.us.

Please note: If you have registered to vote through any outside source, such as the Department of Motor Vehicles, a voter registration drive, or other means, be sure to check with our office to be certain that your application was received.

What is the procedure for voting early/absentee?

Early/absentee ballots are available in the Springfield Town Clerk’s office 20 days before a local election and 45 days prior to a general election. Anyone wishing to vote early may apply for an early/absentee ballot until 4:30 p.m. on the Monday before the election. Early/absentee ballots may be voted in person in the clerk’s office, picked up by the voter at the town clerk’s office or sent to the voter. Early/absentee ballots must be returned by the close of polls on Election Day.

How can I vote if I am ill or physically disabled?

If you are unable to go to the polls due to illness or physical disability you may have the ballot delivered to your residence by two Justices of the Peace. You will need to call the Town Clerk’s office before 4:30 p.m. on the Monday before the election in order to have the Justices deliver your ballot.
