The committee, which includes Senators Addy, Bliss and Gummerson, is looking at UCF, U. of Houston, and the University of Arizona among the others. The committee is interested to see if having a medical school makes a difference in the structure and function of the Faculty Senate.  Thanks to Dev Roy and the Nominating Committee, we have filled all vacancies on our committees and all Senators are fulfilling our constitutional requirement that they serve on a Senate Committee for at least one year.  Committees have been very busy and the minutes of their meetings are being posted on the Faculty Senate web page as they come in. In my written report, I’ve updated you on the status of two committees, the Library Committee, and the Honorary Degree and Awards, which, in addition to proposing an all-electronic on-line application process, has proposed simplifying the application process by reducing the amount of required documentation.  The BBC Committee is reviewing the draft strategic plan to understand and comment on its implications for BBC.  The UCCOC is collecting proposals for the core curriculum—today is the first deadline; November 9 is the next deadline. Instructions and additional information are on-line. This semester, the Committee reviews half the courses in the UCC, which includes English Composition, Quantitative Reasoning and Natural Sciences. The committee will review the Humanities, Arts, and Social Inquiry next semester.  The Curriculum Committee will publish the first curriculum bulletin tomorrow on Univmail and on the Senate website. It will include 15 existing upper division courses proposed for GL designation.  The Ad Hoc Global Learning Curriculum Oversight Committee will review 15 courses per bulletin with a goal of 90 per year.  The On-line Review Committee has requested that Dean Elam attend the Senate to address its concerns.  At its next meeting, the Research, Scholarship and Creative Activities Committee will review implementation of the lab space matrix, lab space for new faculty, and start-up funds for new faculty.  The Nature Preserve and Campus Environment Committee will be focused on fund raising and the strategic plan.  The Ad Hoc Building and Environment Committee reports that the FIU College of Business Administration is ranked #7 for teaching students about sustainability.  The Committees, all 19 of them, do the basic work of the Senate and their efforts are crucially important to the success of the collegial governance process.  Remember to attend this week’s Faculty Convocation Events. For those, unlike myself, who are not teaching at that time, tomorrow evening from 5 pm to 6:30 pm at the Wertheim Performing Arts Center, there will be a concert, courtesy of the FIU School of Music, and a reception afterwards at the Frost Art Museum. Concierge staff carried iPads that were linked to PantherSoft and were able to inform, research and resolve many problems students faced in enrollment and financial situations, right on the spot.  A “Welcome Desk” was established at the east entrance to PC where Concierge members we able to greet and assist students as they came into the building.  A “Forms” window was created at the Registrar’s Office to help students hand in or pick up forms quickly.  The Health Center staffed the front counter in the Registrar’s Office to help students with immunization and insurance hold issues.  An intense pre-planning and cross-training throughout the division was conducted during July and August helped make the Concierge Service a great success.  There were fewer students in line, faster responses to student needs and information disseminated, and generally fewer problems or delays than ever before. The Concierge Service will continue its development and will be offered this coming Spring semester at both MMC and BBC. The model serves as a successful planning instrument for the future Student Academic Support Center.
