“There are few locations within the UK that can compete with Doncaster’s rail heritage, connectivity and cluster of leading rail businesses. As a key hub for Unipart rail, which have multiple sites located here, we are proud to support Doncaster’s bid for CREATE.” George Tillier, Interim CREATE Chair; Managing Director, Unipart Rail “Wabtec Rail’s Doncaster Works is one of the UK’s leading railway rolling stock engineering centres of excellence. Employing over 1,000 people at Doncaster and being a significant part of the global Wabtec Corporation it is essential that in order to continue supporting UK rail we have a locally available source for the training of tomorrow’s engineers.” Paul Robinson, Interim CREATE Vice Chair, Director Wabtec Rail “As a world leader in the provision of value –added, technology based products and services for the global rail industry; Wabtec Corporation recognises the importance of training the next generation of railway engineers. To this end and acknowledging the important role that the Doncaster Works of Wabtec Rail plays in operations, Wabtec Corporation is pleased to support Doncaster’s bid to host the High Speed Rail College”. Raymond T. Belter, President and Chief Executive Officer – Wabtec Corporation, USA “The Sheffield City Region has a number of significant assets which we believe make it an ideal location for the proposed new Rail College. Choosing Doncaster as the location will spread the benefits of the HS2 investment beyond the immediate route into other areas of the North of England.” Geoff Spencer, Chief Executive DB Schenker Rail UK “Doncaster is an important and vibrant rail city. Working on the railway is in the history and heart of the city, both in train operations and in the diverse supply chain for the industry. Awarding the high speed rail college to Sheffield City Region and indeed the North of England would complement Network Rail’s business objectives over the coming years. We are therefore very supportive of Doncaster’s bid, as it is strongly based upon the city’s rail links, the workforce’s existing skill-set and land development opportunities” Stephen Hind, Route Enhancement Manager, Network Rail “We are planning to expand our operations and looking at new locations. Doncaster gives us the best opportunity in terms of existing infrastructure and engineering prowess.” Carl Garrud, Managing Director Austrian Rail Group Rhomberg Sersa ‘Volker Rail fully and whole heartedly supports the bid for Doncaster and the North. We believe this site will be a fantastic success’ Jack Pendle, Engineering Director, Volker Rail LEP and Local Authority Support Our region already contains the largest rail industry cluster in the country – with many thousands of people already employed in major centres such as York, Leeds and Doncaster. We are, of course, steeped in rail heritage and basing the College here in Yorkshire would be the logical step, we feel, to ensuring the maximum return on the Government’s investment.”

Andrew Percy MP and Barry Sheerman MP, Joint Chairs of the Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire Yorkshire All Party Parliamentary Group I am pleased to offer the backing of Durham County Council in support of the bid from Doncaster to host the proposed High Speed Rail College. The Doncaster proposal provides a unique opportunity to build upon and reinforce the major rail and engineering clusters along the route of the East Coast Mainline. We can see the immediate advantages in linking the training and development opportunities currently being developed in the North East with the proposal in Doncaster. HS2 will create many opportunities for work at different skill levels and, if the Doncaster proposal is successful, then together Yorkshire and the North East will have a training offer capable of tailoring support to suit that market. We have been working with the manufacturing and engineering firms and skills providers for some time to address the skills needs and developments within the labour pool over the coming years. With the establishment of the Hitachi train factory at Newton Aycliffe, this has added a further dimension to ensuring that a pool of labour exists to deal with the specific rail industry requirements, but also broader general manufacturing and engineering skills. Having a successful labour supply will increase the attractiveness of the area for further inward investment. The impact of Hitachi has been substantial in creating interest amongst potential supply chain companies and some new inward investors. The High Speed Rail College at Doncaster would add to the offer, as well as producing transferable skills to increase the pool of labour for all of our successful manufacturing industries. We are happy to share information as we develop our facilities, and would say that the capacity for rail engineering in Durham and the wider North east will be circa 500 jobs when Hitachi opens and then a further 30 jobs pa thereafter. As the Northern supply chain develops and embeds over the subsequent years, it is feasible that this figure could increase into the 100s pa. Simon Henig, Leader , Durham County Council The Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership is proudly backing the Sheffield City Region’s bid for a new High Speed Rail college in Doncaster. Sheffield City Region’s bid gives Government the opportunity, not just to rebalance the national economy from the south to north, but also to reverse the skills deficit our region currently faces. The Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership is ready to work closely with the Sheffield City Region LEP – and other partners regionally and nationally – to ensure that economic benefits and training opportunities for residents will be felt far and wide. Our LEPs are already working together across a number of key economic areas including projects to attract inward investment, improve transport connectivity and funding for growing businesses.” Roger Marsh, Chairman of Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership “I fully support Doncaster in their bid for the High Speed Rail College, it can only help the Tees Valley area and the new Hitachi plant on our doorstep.” Bill Dixon, Leader of Darlington Council and Vice Chair of Tees Valley LEP “The Doncaster rail college bid is an excellent opportunity for the Government to help to re-balance the national economy from south to north. If successful this bid will provide huge benefits not only to Doncaster and the Sheffield City Region but to York, the wider Yorkshire and Humberside region and to the North East too.” Cllr James Alexander, Leader of City of York Council “Bringing the High Speed Rail College to Yorkshire represents a once-in-a- generation opportunity to address our skills deficit. Siting it in Doncaster will provide an important, national nearby resource that will give young people in schools and colleges across the Wakefield District, West Yorkshire, the Leeds City Region and the North the opportunity to develop careers in planning and constructing HS2 and the UK’s rail networks of tomorrow” Cllr Peter Box, Chair, West Yorkshire Combined Authority “As a member of the HS2 Growth Task Force, I have strongly advocated HS2’s role in generating wider economic benefits. HS2 provides a unique opportunity to inspire the next generation of engineers and the HS2 College will help to meet this ambition. “The CREATE proposal encapsulates why Sheffield City Region, with its strong rail and advanced manufacturing sectors, world class universities and central location is ideally placed to host the college, and I am pleased to offer my support for the submission.” Julie Dore, Leader, Sheffield City Council “This proposal complements our Strategic Economic Plan. Sheffield City Region has all the elements needed to make the flagship HS2 College a success, including a reputation and heritage in rail engineering, an exceptional engineering business base and world-class further and higher education providers.” James Newman, Chair of the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (SCR LEP) “Happy to support Doncaster’s Bid” Keith Wakefield, Leader of Leeds City Council ‘Doncaster Chamber and all the Yorkshire and Humber Chambers of Commerce are fully backing the bid to build HS2 in Doncaster for Yorkshire’ Phil Harris, Chief Executive, Doncaster Chamber of Commerce “I am very supportive of this Sheffield City Region HS2 FE college bid.
