Minutes of Previous Meeting Minutes of the previous Meeting of 21 September 2011 were accepted as a true and accurate record. Business Arising from Previous Minutes Burwood Public School Festival The Festival is to be on Friday 25 November (3.15-7pm) and will include student talent performances, food stalls, white elephant stall, carnival rides, other stalls and activities. Rachel has arranged for Arathi Elamurugan (Canteen Manager) to help with coordination of the food stalls. Rachel suggested that the canteen itself should not open for the Festival. There will be at least one Chinese food stall. (Mark informed of another parent who expressed the possibility of running a Chinese food stall). Mrs Kwon is arranging for a Korean food stall with parents from the Korean community, including several new ones. She asked if a note in Korean (that she will prepare) can go out to the parents, eg in the next school newsletter scheduled for 27 October or as a separate note. There will be a meeting for the Korean parents regarding the food stall on Thursday 3 November. There will be a meeting for all food stall representatives, and a general Festival preparation meeting, on Friday 4 November from 9am in the staff room. An Aussie BBQ stall to go ahead as usual, and it was decided that soft drinks should be sold from this stall. Rachel will arrange soft drink purchase and eskies. A Gelato stall is to go ahead. Mark gave the details from ‘Pure Gelato’ to Rachel so she can consider about the flavours to order. The ‘Bean2Work’ coffee van has agreed to come and (as before) will give the school 15% of the profit. Other stalls confirmed include a White Elephant Stall run by Peta Andersen (as usual). “Fun Tatts”, an ornament/toys stall, and a giftware stall (run by Janet). Mark has written to the Fire Brigade and to St John Ambulance to seek their participation. One idea is for face painting and this could be possibly be run (or assisted) by teachers. Janet is arranging a banner through Vista Print (approx. $200; 2.45m x 76cm), suggested to be hung on the fence near the Conder St / Railway Pde Roundabout, inviting the community to our “Burwood Public School Festival”. She is also arranging for advertising (eg in Community Notices) in the Inner West Courier informing that this is the P&C Association’s major fundraiser with all profits to the school. Showbags are to be ordered probably through Mr Showbags. Details of the Student Talent Performances are yet to be sorted. Shane Randall (music teacher) is currently away. The SRC/student councillors need to be approached to act as MCs (etc.) Mark is to organise a Lolly Jar Guessing Competition as a lead-up activity (as for the Festival in 2009). There will be a (free) Mufti Day on the Festival Day. For the carnival rides, it is intended to pre-sell wristbands prior to the day (as before) on the weekday mornings, 8.30- 9am. Amanda offered to help with this. An official photographer should be arranged. Canteen Arathi has drafted a pro-forma for issuing to parents whose children do not have (enough) money for lunch that is supplied, eg when teachers send children to the canteen who do not have lunch. This was approved subject to editing. Rachel is to do the editing. Troy followed up on the issue of a regular (eg. annual) review of the Canteen Manager. This is to be included in the job description drafted by Rachel earlier this year. Mark suggested decisions would be required on the criteria against which such a review will be assessed, plus by whom (and when) will the review take place? Rachel followed up on the issue of the sign-in for volunteers required at the front office in case of an emergency (etc.). It was suggested that Arathi provide a daily list of volunteers to the office when she comes for the teachers’ lunch orders. OC Class Troy is to consult with Paul Bates regarding data and anecdotes requested by Charles Casuscelli’s office so he can represent our request for an OC class as Burwood Public School to the appropriate government authorities. Road Safety Troy reported that there has been no further progress to date as he is waiting for the bottom gate to be reopened before meeting again with the Council’s Road Safety Officer (Janet) to further address concerns about traffic safety in Oxford Street. and on the corner of Stanley Street and Hornsey Street. Interview Training Mark recalled since after the last meeting that Amanda Ng is our representative for the Chinese community (though others could be trained too). Fatma is still interested to be trained as a parent representative. Air Conditioning Troy reported that a DEC asset manager is coming to the school over the next couple of days to determine the school’s needs. Troy to investigate whether DEC or the school community can install curtaining or upgrade ceiling fans (etc.) in the classrooms not yet air conditioned. Air conditioning needs to be provided in KN and 5/6F in particular.

School & Sports Uniform Troy showed a sports shirt that Ms Forward is suggesting to be used (for now). The current design may require modesty panels for girls – to be investigated. P&C Funds Assistance – Burwood RSL Mark, Rachel, Janet and Mr Bain arranged to meet next Tuesday 25 October, 3pm in the school library, regarding a grant application to Burwood RSL to give some funding for interactive white boards. , Ultimately such white boards are being sought for all the classrooms. Ethics Class Rachel and her husband, Bill, are happy to do training as volunteers for Ethnic Classes and need to apply with the appropriate authority. As previously reported, the P&C Association has underwritten the purchase of 8 boxes of books (and trolleys) for the students in the non-scripture classes. Parent Handbook The idea of putting the Parent Handbook on the school website, and revising it on the website, is still to be pursued.

Signage at Gates and outside the Toilets Troy is waiting on the return of the Perspex panel on the noticeboard at the front of the school that is being replaced and then will follow up with this company regarding signage for the school gates and outside the toilets regarding access restrictions. Kindergarten Orientation The first of three Kindergarten Orientation sessions was held yesterday. The others will be on Tuesday 1 and 15 November. The P&C Association is to make a presentation on 1 November including with regard to the Canteen and Uniform Shop. Uniform orders can be made on this day. Dr Shoe is not available on 1 November but could be available on 15 November. Asbestos As reported at the last meeting, evidence of asbestos fibres has been found in building material buried years ago near the big tree in the Lower Stanley Street playground, and the area has been isolated. An Asbestos Report indicates that the fibres present a low level if exposed and none if there is grassy cover. So the plan is to establish raised garden beds on top of exposed area, with timber sleepers to mark boundaries., and a concrete path around the whole structure. Mr Kutlay Elansari has been helping with advice regarding the asbestos issue. (See also Principal’s Report) President’s Report: Development near Belmore Street Burwood Council has sent details of a Development Application for a 19 storey residential commercial and office tower (with three level underground parking) between the Masonic Centre and Wynne Ave. Responses were required by last Friday. It was noted that the 2-hour free parking diagonally across from the school was closed without notice yesterday. This will be a great inconvenience to several parents.
