CALL TO ARTISTS FOR ART SHELTER MURALS
Deadline for Application January 17, 2014 Eligibility – Kentucky Artists No Application Fee
Project Description Art in Motion, in partnership with the Lexington Corridors Commission, LexArts and Lextran, is seeking professional artists. Our goal is to provide an opportunity to display site-responsive work that will engage the community and encourage citizens to consider the role of art in our streetscape and public transportation. Art in Motion's mission is to make Lexington a more vibrant, livable city through the fusion of public art, public transit and public spaces. This contest is being sponsored by a grant from the Lexington Corridors Commission and donations to Art in Motion.
This call seeks new murals for two art shelters that are part of the Art in Motion program: East End Artstop and Bluegrass Art Shelter. The East End Artstop is located across from the historic Lyric Theatre and Cultural Arts Center at the corner of Third and Elm Tree Lane. The location is a public gallery in the outdoor space of a transit shelter that serves Lextran and downtown Lexington’s East End. The stop features a colorful sculpture piece, as well as five 2-D art mural panels that will feature the work of the artist chosen in this contest. The panels are 27 ½” x 48” in size.
Bluegrass Art Shelter is located on Newtown Pike, across from the Fayette County Health Department at Ash Street. It has two large 2-D mural frames that measure 38"w x 59"h and features large, blue stainless steel tubes that evoke our region’s famous bluegrass. Artists are encouraged to view the sites.
A different artist will be chosen for each shelter’s mural display. The work will be displayed for no less than 3 months. The art must transfer well onto weatherproof PVC panels. The artist will provide a high resolution digital image to be transferred onto the panels by Art in Motion, Inc. (The artist will be assisted with digital technology, if needed.) Project Scope and Themes Three goals of this project are to: . Provide an opportunity for artists to create large scale artwork in the public realm. . Encourage environmental sustainability, by increasing public transit ridership though art. . Enhance the waiting experience at the East End Artstop and Bluegrass Art Shelter.
The images for the Bluegrass Art Shelter should explore themes of energy, movement, kinetic power and transformation.
The images for the East End Artstop should explore themes involving the rich history of the East End neighborhood, the historic Lyric Theatre and/or the history and importance of jazz, blues and R & B in America’s black communities.
We are open to an individual artist or artists collaborating with other professionals to create unique public artwork. Images should be bold enough to be viewed from a distance and also interesting when viewed up close. The image will be enlarged, so high resolution digital format is required.
Honorarium Each artist selected to display work will receive an honorarium of $500 for use of their images.
Project Site The selected image or images for East End Artstop will be enlarged to 27 ½” x 48” for each of five panels. The selected image or images for Bluegrass Art Shelter will be enlarged to 38"w x 59"h and installed in two panel spaces. The artwork will be lit at night.
A six inch banner along the bottom of the each panel will be reserved for project information and acknowledgements. The selected artist will work through Art in Motion to transfer the chosen digital image or images to the display panels. Once a suitable digital image or negative is provided to Art in Motion, a professional print will be made onto a durable panel suitable for outdoor display.
