PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Counselor/Academic Advisor 2010-Present

Houston Community College – Office of Student Services – Houston, TX – An open admission, public institution of higher education with a diverse enrollment of more than 75, 000 students.  Provide personal, career, educational, and transitional advisement and guidance.  Maintain contact with community resources for referral purposes to address issues non-related to educational deficiencies.  Identify individual learning and/or tutoring needs and have assisted students in overcoming deficiencies which has resulted in higher retention rates.  Reduce attrition rates by providing program planning which includes major selection, course and elective selection, degree plans, and course transferability.  Assist students in acquiring information and in developing an understanding of themselves and the environment which is necessary for growth and holistic development.  Conduct Advising and Registration Sessions in order to service several students during the registration process and throughout the academic semester.

Counselor 2012-Present Houston Community College – Comprehensive Student Success Program – Houston, TX  Responsible for administering the pre and post Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) to students enrolled in three low success rate courses.  Analyze data to help students identify strengths and weakness in the overall learning and studying process.  Determine how successful learning can be altered through educational interventions by conducting workshops to improve learning and study skills, time management, self-testing, and testing strategies.  Provide resources including additional advisement and tutoring.

Clinical Director 2007-2010 Totally Fit Residential Treatment Center - Houston, TX - A residential treatment facility servicing adolescent females with a history of physical and/or sexual abuse that are involved with Child Protective Services and/or the Juvenile Justice System.  Created treatment plans and services plans to include the psychiatric and mental health treatment for clients in order to assist in minimizing disruptive behaviors and symptoms.  Constructed comprehensive progress notes based on symptom presentation, therapeutic interventions, and behavioral definitions in order to justify and document treatment plans to outside review entities for reimbursement for services.  Responsible for psychosocial assessments to gather pertinent information about the client’s past academic performance, developmental milestones, and family history and background.  Trained staff regarding licensing requirements, cognitive distortions, behavioral maintenance, and recognizing clients that demonstrate symptoms and behaviors needing immediate psychiatric treatment.  Attended and contributed toward the Individual Educational Planning Committee Meetings (IEPC) and treatment review/case planning sessions to ensure proper and progressive treatment maintenance.

Program Coordinator 2005-2008 Texas Southern University - College of Education - Houston, TX - A doctoral-granting, urban research Historically Black University with an enrollment of 9,700 students.  Assisted in the development of the grant which resulted in the funding of the Student Advisement Center to increase recruitment, retention, and graduation rates and activities.  Increased enrollment rates of students by developing and distributing brochures and handbooks and by employing intensive recruitment activities within the school districts of Houston and surrounding areas. Prepared retention analysis reports for the Dean of the College, made recommendations and increased retention rates by providing programs to address course planning, academic advisement, time management, and career decision- making.  Managed the daily operations of the (SAC) including two academic advisors, an office assistant, and student assistants.  Oversaw the fiscal management of a $275,000 programming and operational budget.  Addressed the unique needs of non-traditional students enrolled in programs with an emphasis on Urban Education.  Coordinated the College’s scholarship program by reviewing academic achievement and nominating recipients.  Increased graduation rates through comprehensive academic advisement, coordinating mailings for students in academic jeopardy and/or deficiency, and ensuring student satisfaction levels and achievement potential was addressed.

CPS Adoption Specialist/Instructor & Trainer 2001-2005 Texas Department of Family and Protective Services - Houston, TX Adoption caseworker and foster care trainer for families intending to become licensed foster/adoptive parents in the state of Texas.  Reviewed, admitted, and trained prospective foster/adoptive parents in the state of Texas to decrease large percentage of children in the foster care system and to provide stable, nurturing homes while remaining in compliance with federal mandates.  Wrote comprehensive home studies which included in-depth information about the individuals in the home as well as the family unit to ensure quality homes for licensure in the state.  Trained foster/adoptive parents on topics including a review and evaluation of their individual backgrounds and thought processes, appropriate discipline techniques, molding and modeling appropriate behaviors, and conflict resolution in order to reduce the shortage of foster parents and homes for children in need. Teaching/Research Assistant 2002 Texas Southern University - College of Education - Houston, TX  Assisted the Associate Dean of Education in the daily activities of the Office of Student Affairs, research projects, and classroom instruction.  Conducted the administration of student evaluations of faculty members.  Provided research that contributed to the subject matter and coursework for graduate classes.  Contributed insight and resources for undergraduate students at-risk academically and personally.  Assisted in the writing of the grant which was funded to initiate the Student Advisement Center. Contributed towards the research concerning adolescent females with a history of physical and sexual abuse.  Completed Intake assessments of adolescents to determine eligibility for the research project.  Administered the psychological (K-BIT) testing to eligible participants.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE Adjunct Faculty 2012-Present Houston Community College – Department of Education - Houston, TX  Teach two sections per semester of Learning Frameworks: EDUC 1300. This course is the study of the research and theory in the psychology of learning, cognition, and motivation, the factors that impact learning, and application of learning strategies.
