1 Romeo and Juliet FAQ Project
The goal of this project is to create a list of “Frequently Asked Questions” about any topic closely associated with Romeo and Juliet, Elizabethan England, or any topic related to the play. This is technically a research project, not a research paper, though it accomplishes the same purposes (teaching research skills, paraphrasing, and proper MLA documentation and format).
Instructions 1. Brainstorm a list of possible topics and themes that are related to this unit. I’ve provided some for you; create your own ideas on the lines provided. Marriages in other cultures Suicide Elizabethan England Shakespeare’s Life The Globe Theater ______Gender roles in Renaissance Italy ______Famous Family Feuds ______
2. Choose some of the topics mentioned in #1. Begin to generate six questions that you will be able to research online and in books. Look for small and interesting (and intriguing) details that you will be able to explore -- for example, if you are researching Genocide in various cultures, perhaps you can create questions about the motivations behind genocide (Why are certain victims selected? How do family members deal with these conditions? What reasons do various cultures provide for genocide?
3. Make sure that you have final versions of the six questions ready to go before you begin your research online.
5. After logging in, immediately open up Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer in separate windows. Type your title page (see the sample paper for the correct format). On a new page, begin your project, following the format of the sample paper.
6. To add your last name and page number to each page, click on Insert Page number top of page plain number 3. Type your last name but do NOT type any numbers – let the computer assign the numbers to each page.
7. Before you start typing, first format your paper using standard MLA guidelines. On the ribbon at the top of the screen, pull down the Paragraph section by clicking on the arrow. Set spacing before and after to zero and line spacing to double, and then click OK. On the Home tab, set font to Times New Roman size 12, if it is not already set that way. Follow the sample given on how to start your paper. In MLA format, we do NOT use cover pages.
8. For each answer that you find, you must paraphrase (put it in your own words) and document your response. You may use easybib.com or citationmachine.net or noodletools to create your citation, and MLA format is also in your style guide and on the sample paper itself.
9. You may not just copy and paste your answers. From these sources, you must create an original paragraph that fully answers your question. It is permissible to use quotes from your source as long as you provide proper MLA parenthetical documentation. You may also use the same source to answer multiple questions. 10. You must also cite where you obtained that information by using parenthetical documentation (a.k.a. in-text citation). The sample paper has some examples of this. Also, you must use at least four sources overall (at least one from the internet and at least one from a book). DO NOT use Wikipedia, Yahoo Answers, Wiki Answers, Bing Answers, or Ask Jeeves as a source. Academic sources are available at the Kennesaw Mountain Virtual Library. If you have found a source, but you are unsure if it is an academic source, raise your hand. I will be more than happy to assist.
11. Start a new page (click “Control” and enter) and type “Works Cited” at the top (center it). In alphabetical order, list every source that you cited earlier in your paper with all of the documentation information (see the backside of your MLA Style Guide). If you have the same source for multiple questions, you only have to put it on the Works Cited page once. In each citation, indent every line after the first one. To do this, highlight all of your sources, click on Paragraph special hangingOK.
Before You Print and Turn In Your Final Draft: 1. Check the format of your paper. _____ The font should be 12-point Times New Roman. _____ Everything should be double-spaced. _____ All margins and indentations should match those on the sample paper. _____ The format of each section should match the sample paper.
2. Check your grammar and writing. _____ Make sure you don’t have any fragments or egregious grammatical errors. _____ Make sure your answers directly address the question you asked. _____ Make sure your answers are at least five sentences long each.
When you print, do not print front / back the way I have done it – I only did this to conserve paper.
All papers must be turned in by ______. That means no late credit or partial credit-- your paper will either be turned in on time or it will get a zero.
