2011 Annual NC1180, "Control of Emerging and Re-emerging Poultry Respiratory Diseases in the United States" Meeting Minutes, January 22-23, 2012
The annual NC 1180 business meeting was held on Sunday, January 22, 2012 at Georgia World Center Room 403, Atlanta, GA. Dr. Mazhar Khan, Chair of NC 1180 (term 2011-2012) opened the meeting at 2:30 pm. He welcomed the station representatives, participating scientists and guests. The names listed below are the attendees.
State Station Representatives Participating Scientists Alabama Haroldo. Toro Joseph Giambrone Arkansas Byung-Whi Kong (absent) Connecticut Mazhar Khan Delaware Jack Gelb (absent) Calvin Keeler, Erin Brannick Georgia Mark Jackwood Maricarmen Garcia, Naola Ferguson-Noel
Illinois Deoki Tripathy (absent) Indiana Tsang Long Lin Ching Ching Wu Minnesota Tim Johnson Ohio Chang Won Lee Mo Saif SPERL-USDA Laszlo Zsak M. J. Pantin-Jackwood, Qingzhong Yu
The meeting minutes from previous year prepared by the Secretary, Dr. Ching Ching Wu, were reviewed. Dr. Joe Giambrone made a motion to accept the minutes as prepared. It was second by Dr. Tsang Long Lin and approved by members unanimously.
In last year’s meeting, the members expressed concerns on the lack of national program to address emerging VVIBDV problems and recommended a letter be sent to USDA stating this need. Letter was drafted by Drs. Chang Won Lee and Ching Ching Wu immediately after the meeting and revised by Dr. M. Saif, and submitted to APHIS USDA. Dr. Cindy Smith from APHIS USDA thanked our group for the insight, but indicated that funds and efforts had been provided to California to a successful control of this disease. While it remains an important disease, it is not enough to be on the list of national program disease due to its limited distribution. Based on the recommendation from our recent conference call with NIFA USDA (see a few paragraph below for more details on the call), it was agreed that letter of this kind should also be sent to NIFA so multiple agencies can allocated funds for the control and monitoring of emerging diseases of concern. Meeting venue and time was discussed in depth. Places and dates other than Atlanta in January, including USAHA and CRWAD, were suggested and added to the final list for voting. A vote of 6 -2 was in favor of Atlanta over other choices. It is mostly due to fund and time constraint. The 2012 NC 1180 annual meeting date will be Jan 22 Sunday and Jan 23 Monday 2013 in Atlanta GA.
The reporting format was reevaluated by members for more efficiency and collaborations. It was agreed that a copy of pdf file with detailed written station report should be emailed to the entire group at least one week before the physical annual meeting to allow member to review and formulate possible collaborations. In addition, the station reporting at the meeting can be streamlined and be more organized. Effective 2012, there is a time limitation (maximum of 30 min) for report presentation from each station at the annual meeting. The stations with large numbers of reports only need to highlight their findings instead of going over the entire report to allow more time for interaction and discussion of potential collaboration on research. Since the written report is on public domain, unpublished data should not be included in the report but can be shared and discussed in the meeting. Members should bring 20 copies of written report to the meeting.
Dr. Mo Saif, the NC1180 Advisor joined us in the afternoon and reiterated the importance of documenting collaboration among stations in the annual report. He also discussed the list of names from the industry that NC1180 may want to invite and seek inputs regarding industry needs and perspectives. Several names representing the broiler, eggs, duck and turkey industries were mentioned to be invited for the next meeting. In addition, representatives from the Poultry and Egg Association Research Program should be invited to the annual meeting as well.
Dr. Peter Johnson, NIFA representative, was not able to join the group in Atlanta. A pre-meeting all-member conference call requested and arranged by Dr. Ching Ching Wu, the Secretary, was held on January 19, 2012. Dr. Johnson kindly provided USDA call in information and send a handout detailed the updates of NIFA personnel, available funds, fund distributions, programs, program changes, new and old activities, etc., for 2011 and 2012. In the near one hour call, Dr. Johnson discussed with the members the foundation program and indicated that there will be no disease priority list in 2012’s RFP. Dr. Johnson answered a few critical questions addressed by members and advised all to read and follow the RFP closely. As stated previously, the interaction of this group with Dr. Cindy Smith at APHIS regarding the VVIBDV were discussed, Dr. Johnson encouraged this group to send letter to NIFA in addition to APHIS in the future.
The members thanked USPEA for the complimentary meeting room, light breakfast, coffee and soft drinks in the conventional center. The members also wish to thank Dr. Holly Seller from UGA for her initiation of this inquiry so that Dr. Ching Ching Wu, the Secretary, could follow up, obtain approval and make final arrangements with USPEA.
Dr. Mazhar Khan, the Chair, reminded station representatives to send him electronic version of the report and include impact statements as directed by the official format, immediately.
Dr. Tim Johnson was elected as the Secretary for 2012-2013. The members thanked Dr. Ching Ching Wu for her time and effort as the Secretary for the past two years.
The annual progress report from all Stations began immediately after the business meeting. They were efficient, insightful and focused on the pathogenesis, new diagnostics tools and vaccine/immunology of various poultry respiratory and immunosuppresive diseases.
The annual progress meeting resumed at 7:00 am on Monday and adjourned at 11:30 am, January 23, 2012.
Respectfully submitted, Ching Ching Wu, DVM, PhD, Secretary, National Committee 1180 January 31, 2012
