During the week of 23 competition for this coveted title against forty-one contestants, she 24 captured a preliminary swimwear award on Thursday evening and 25 a tap dance to Harry Connick, Jr.’s “Just Kiss Me” earned her a 26 preliminary talent award Friday evening; and 27 28 Whereas, her father, Sam Raney, her twenty-six-year-old brother, 29 Jeremy, and Jeremy’s wife, Crystal, were present on Saturday 30 evening, July 14, 2001, when Jeanna Raney was crowned Miss 31 South Carolina 2001 before a packed house at the Spartanburg 32 Memorial Auditorium; and 33 34 Whereas, Jeanna is fortunate to have as her official chaperone to 35 the Miss America Pageant our colleague Representative Rita 36 Allison. For the past twenty-two years, Representative Allison has 37 served as the official chaperone for Miss South Carolina at the 38 Miss America Pageant; and 39 40 Whereas, the tall, pretty blonde has been groomed for pageants all 41 of her life. She has held numerous titles. Her parents met at a

Jeanna even appeared as an extra in the movie 2 “Beautiful”, which had a pageant theme; and 3 4 Whereas, two years ago Jeanna was not thinking about being Miss 5 South Carolina. She did not want to enter without a platform that 6 was meaningful to her. Then, in September of 1999, Jeanna and 7 her family were faced with the sudden death of her mother, 8 Rhonda. Suddenly the pageant became something she felt 9 compelled, almost obligated, to enter. As her first official duty, a 10 day after being named Miss South Carolina 2001, Jeanna Raney 11 stood at her first news conference Sunday morning and spoke 12 strongly about the tragedy that changed her life. She plans to use 13 the crown to continue her service platform by bringing awareness 14 and inspiration to others concerning mental illness and suicide 15 prevention. At the conclusion of her reign as our Miss South 16 Carolina, Jeanna will convert the crown to a becoming hat and 17 continue helping other individuals find something positive in 18 family tragedy; and 19 20 Whereas, Jeanna Raney is a 1991 honors graduate of Chapman 21 High School and is a rising junior at the University of South 22 Carolina, where she is majoring in business administration; and 23 24 Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the General 25 Assembly to pause in their deliberations to honor and recognize 26 the courage of this fine young woman and we, along with the 27 citizens of Inman and our great State, are extremely proud of our 28 new “Miss South Carolina 2001”. Now, therefore, 29 30 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 31 concurring: 32 33 That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South 34 Carolina, by this resolution, offer their sincere congratulations to 35 the Palmetto State’s newly crowned “Miss South Carolina 2001”, 36 Jeanna Raney, of Inman and extend our warmest wishes to her 37 during the Miss America Pageant which will be held on September 38 22, 2001, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. 39 40 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 41 Miss South Carolina, Jeanna Raney. 42 ----XX----
