ME 100 – Mechanical Engineering Communication and Professionalism
Communications Assignment Week #1 Fall 2006
Objective: The objective of this week’s assignment is to familiarize students with the JobMine website as well as inform them on what makes a good résumé and cover letter. JobMine is the portal you must use to engage Co-operative Education and Career Services (co-op).
Principles: An eye catching résumé and cover letter are essential to the future of any coop student. For this reason you will be asked to create a résumé that fully and clearly illustrates your skills and experience, as well as a proper cover letter. These can then be used for your co-op applications.
Procedure: 1. Create a cover letter for the Job Posting on the ME 100 website (www.eng.uwaterloo.ca/~me100) and insert it at the beginning of your résumé. 2. Save your résumé as an html document keeping in mind the suggestions made in class. This can be done easily by saving your résumé from Microsoft Word, Corel WordPerfect, OpenOffice, etc. as an html document. (Caution: The formatting used by your word processor does not always transfer well. You may need to make some changes to your formatting.) 3. Logon to JobMine at: https://jobmine.uwaterloo.ca/ 4. Navigate to: JobMine->Student->Use->Documents->Create New Resume (The new résumé should now be created and displayed as “New”) 5. Hit “Edit” next to the newly created résumé to modify its content. 6. Copy and paste the html code of your newly created résumé into the provided space. You can view the html by opening the file in Wordpad or Notepad. 7. Click on “Upload HTML Resume” and ensure there are no errors in the html code. 8. Return to the “Documents” page to view and print your résumé.
Deliverables: You are required to hand in a print out of your résumé that has been uploaded to JobMine. The print out must show the JobMine address stamp at the bottom of the page in order to receive credit. See the marking scheme for the distribution of marks.
