SUNDAY SCIENCE SPECTACULAR MAY 22 AT RUTGERS

NEW BRUNSWICK/PISCATAWAY, N.J. – A science extravaganza, free and open to the public, will kick off a regional meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. A full day of fascinating fun is planned Sunday, May 22 at Rutgers’ Busch campus in Piscataway. The four-day Middle Atlantic Regional Meeting of the ACS, “Chemistry at the Crossroads of Science,” is expected to attract more than 1,500 people to the opening day demonstrations and exhibits and to the technical symposia and research presentations throughout the week. The Sunday program, Science Education and Careers Day, is geared to the interests of high school students and their teachers, but anyone with a penchant for things scientific will enjoy the activities. While there is no charge for Sunday, attendees should register beginning at 9 a.m. at the Busch Campus Center, 604 Bartholomew Road, where program material is available. Throughout the day, the famed IMAX movie “Volcanoes of the Deep” will be shown, with commentary from Rutgers scientists involved in its production. A “chemistry wizard show” will feature demonstrations from the magical world of chemistry, and the ever-popular Faraday Physics Show, usually reserved for holiday audiences, will be presented. Demonstrations, presentations, workshops and panel discussions will fill the day. Topics include robotics, forensic science, pharmaceuticals, antibiotics, food science and technology, science and art, the history of science, science education, careers in science and helpful hints for parents and teachers. Tours of Rutgers’ Wright-Rieman chemistry laboratories also will be offered. The Math Science Learning Center will be open all day with hands-on demonstrations and activities.
