One of the most popular summer activities in Howard County is for students to participate in the Summer Reading Program at the Howard County Library. Historically, Lisbon Elementary School has done an amazing job with participating in this fun and free program: we have won awards for three consecutive years for having the highest percentage of student participation in the Summer Reading Program! Last year, we were just a few percentage points shy of having the highest participation for the fourth year in a row. We would love to have 100% student participation in the Summer Reading Program, so please consider registering your child today.

To make it easy for you to register your child for this program so that they can read and earn prizes this summer, Mrs. Hastings has offered to hand-deliver summer game boards and sign up prizes to your child in their classroom next week before the last day of school. There are three ways you can register:

 Send in the white registration form that was sent home with each student on Wednesday.

 Visit the Glenwood Library and sign up your child in person; you will receive your game board

directly from the library if you opt to do this.

 Visit on http://tinyurl.com/mrcbuz8 to register your child online through our Media Center.

Reading is the perfect way to stay sharp over the summer! Be sure to get yourself a great book while your there with the kids!

Sincerely, Michael Caldwell Principal SCHOOL NEWS

LES GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM END-OF-THE-YEAR REPORT: It has been a pleasure working with students and their families throughout this year in the various Gifted and Talented Program offerings. Some highlights of the program include:

Gifted and Talented Mathematics (Grades 4 and 5) The G/T Mathematics Program offers an enriched mathematics curriculum that is accelerated by at least two years. It replaces the general education mathematics curriculum and is taught daily by the G/T Resource Teacher. This curriculum prepares students for Pre-Algebra G/T in Grade 6. CogAT scores from third grade as well as additional indicators of outstanding performance in mathematics are used when determining student placement.  19.7% of students in grade 4 participated  27% of students in grade 5 participated

Curriculum Extension Units (Enrichment Classes for Grades 2-5) Curriculum Extension Units offer opportunities for selected students to participate in thematic units that engage them in advanced-level thinking, questioning, and research. Student selection is based on academic strengths as demonstrated on a variety of performance indicators. While participating in these units, students receive instruction from the G/T Resource Teacher (approximately 2 hours a week) in advanced- level communication, research, and technology skills.  41.4% of students in grades 2-5 participated

Instructional Seminars (Recess Clubs for Grades 2-5) Instructional Seminars are small interest based groups that meet with a G/T Resource Teacher approximately once a week during recess. The duration of the Instructional Seminar varies based on the topic. Each Instructional Seminar is limited to approximately 10 participants and students are limited to a single Instructional Seminar. Students who are interested in participating must complete an application at the beginning of the school year. (The Geography Bee and Spelling Bee are additional Instructional Seminars for fourth and fifth graders. Students are selected based on their performance on a written test that is administered in individual classrooms.)  51.7% of students in grades 2-5 participated

Guest Lessons (Kindergarten and Grade 1) Students in kindergarten and grade 1 participated in guest lessons taught by the G/T Resource Teacher. These lessons are intended to help identify and develop talent in these young learners.

If you have any questions about the Gifted and Talented Program, please feel free to contact Jodi O’Connor, G/T Resource Teacher, at [email protected] , Bobbi Guizzotti, G/T Resource Teacher, at [email protected] , or visit www.hcpss.org/academics/gt/program_elementary.shtml.

WILL YOUR CHILD BE ATTENDING A NEW SCHOOL NEXT YEAR? If your child in grades K-4th grade will not be attending Lisbon Elementary School next year or your 5th grader will not be attending Glenwood Middle School, please contact the school office at 410-313-5506.

FROM THE ART ROOM: Ms. Costello would appreciate if you could save the following items over the summer: Foam egg cartons Yarn buttons Fabric Cereal boxes men’s button-up shirts

Also please visit Artsonia over the summer and see your child’s work if you have not already done so. There is a terrific line of gifts to order if you need a special present for friends & family. Also sign up a grandparent or relative to be part of your child’s fan club and the work will automatically be sent to that email every time artwork is posted. Upload summer artwork or send digital pictures to Ms. Costello at [email protected] and she will post on your child’s page.
