LANGLIER INDEX The Langlier index is a ratio of many factors that help to determine the corrosiveness of the water. It reflects the equilibrium of the calcium and alkalinity (as CaCo3) in relation to the pH of the water. If the Langlier index is positive then the water is scale forming and will deposit calcium carbonate and dissolved solids. If the Langlier index is negative then the water is corrosive. If the Langlier index is "zero" then the water is said to be stable. L.I. = pH - pHs 2 Where pHs = A + B - log (ca ) - log (Alky)
Values of A for temperature Values of B for TDS Values of log Alky or Ca2 Temp. C A mg/L B mg/L Log 10 5 2.27 0 9.63 10 1.00 10 2.20 50 9.72 20 1.30 15 2.12 100 9.75 30 1.48 20 2.05 200 9.80 40 1.60 25 1.98 400 9.86 50 1.70 30 1.91 800 9.94 60 1.78 The Langlier index will be calculated monthly at three representative points. This should provide a representative index of water conditions throughout the KWD.
