How to Perform a Listening Check

Monitoring your child’s hearing aid is a very important habit to get into! Young children do not always have the skills to communicate when there is a problem with their hearing aids. Each day, prior to putting the hearing aid on your child, take a minute to perform a listening check by following these steps:

1. Look at the hearing aid – are there cracks in the case or any missing parts? 2. Check the battery – use the battery tester provided at your hearing aid fitting to see that the battery has power left. 3. Put the battery in, turn the hearing aid on – does it make any feedback or whistling noises when you hold it in your hand? 4. Use the hearing aid stethoscope or listening tube provided at your hearing aid fitting to listen to the hearing aid. Place the tip of the earmold in one end of the listening tube, and place the other end in your ear. 5. Repeat the Ling sounds (aah, ooh, eee, sss, shh, mmm) and/or the days of the week while listening to the aid – do you sound clear and loud?

If the hearing aid has no sound, makes crackling or buzzing sounds, or cuts on and off by itself, contact your audiologist. The hearing aid may need to go to the manufacturer for repair.
