Alfred C. Snider is the Edwin W. Lawrence Professor of Forensics at the University of Vermont with degrees from Brown University, Emerson College, and the University of Kansas. He teaches debate, argumentation, persuasion and rhetorical analysis. He is the Director of the World Debate Institute and the Lawrence Debate Union. Dr. Snider has spent over forty years promoting debate and critical communication as an alternative to violence and conflict and as a method for achieving a true civil society, and has engaged in formal debate training in over forty-four countries. He has directed the program at international academic conferences in Turkey, Estonia, Qatar and Slovenia attended by scholars from over thirty-eight nations. Dr. Snider has received the Pelham Coach of the Year award, the Don Brownlee Service to Debate award, the Ziegelmueller Debate Coaching award, the Slappey Diversity in Debate award, the Douglas Dedication to Debate award, the National Speech & Debate Association Humanitarian Award and the Jacobsohn Service to Debate award, as well as awards from Qatar Foundation, Emory University, University of Utah, Cornell University, Binghamton University, University of South Carolina, the National Speech and Debate Association and the Cross Examination Debate Association. He has thirteen times been the training director at the International Debate Academy held in Europe. In 2012 he was the Chief Adjudicator at the US Universities Debating Championship and in 2014 and 2015 the Pan American Universities Debate Championship. In 2013 the National Forensic League named him as the coach of Team USA for the World Schools Debate Championship 2014 and 2015. He has published numerous books on debating in the last few years and has edited or written over fifty volumes about debating and for debaters. He is the host of over 475 episodes of the television program Flashpoint. He was named 2008 Director of the Year by Vermont Community Access Media. Dr. Snider was President of the USA’s Cross Examination Debate Association, and for ten years was the Director of Operations for the National Speech & Debate Association’s national high debate championship attended by over seven thousand people. He has twice been the host and once the chief adjudicator of the US Universities Debating Championship. He has directed over 45 debate tournaments in different parts of the world. He has served as a consultant to the Open Society Institute, the New York Urban Debate League, the National Association for Urban Debate Leagues, the History Channel, QatarDebate, the Associated Leaders of Urban Debate, the International Debate Education Association, the International Public Policy Forum, Singapore Ministry of Education, Verbattle India, Slovenia Institute of Education, and DEBATE-Kansas City. As a debater for Brown University he was third at the 1972 National Debate Tournament and second at the USA National Tournament of Champions. He maintains the world’s busiest debate website, Debate Central (http://debate.uvm.edu), and is the editor of Global Debate (http://globaldebateblog.blogspot.com ) with millions of visitors. He has pioneered using the Internet and new media for debating. Dr. Snider’s mottos include “Replacing weapons with words,” and “Think for yourself.”
