CST Agenda: Week Of

English IV Agenda: Week of September 8 through 12

Monday, 9/8

We will be in the library today to select novels for independent reading.

Beyond that, we have a set of objectives this week, many of which are directly related to the structure and organization of this class and your work. By the end of the week, you will be familiar with:  How each day of the week will be structured;  How your binder is to be organized;  The overarching objective is to help you be successful in English IV.

Tuesday, 9/9

 Book bags and purses under or right beside desks, please. Remember, there is to be no electronics usage during class.

Review:  POWER matrix—Role play (period 2)

 SLANT—Sit up, lean forward, ask/answer questions, nod, track speaker

 Course overview and guidelines/requirements packet is overdue, as is the student questionnaire.

 Appropriate heading: Your Name Mrs. Tassey English IV Period 2 Date

 Introduction of “Independent Reading and Literary Analysis” (IRLA):

All IRLA responses are to be complete, well-supported paragraphs with clear topic sentences and EVIDENCE to support your opinions. This evidence takes the form of quotes and specific references to the events, characters and setting in your novel.

We will begin every day with ten minutes of independent reading and writing in response to a prompt. Date each entry IN the left-hand margin, and copy any part of the prompt highlighted in yellow. Entries will be collected every five days.

 Overview of ring binder organization:

Section 1: Independent Reading and Literary Analysis (IRLA) Section 2: Common Core Handouts Section 3: Work in Progress Section 4: Reference Handouts Section 5: Returned Work Section 6: Annotated Bibliography (Bib.)

Work Period: Preview rubric for essay. Work on baseline essay—first draft due Thursday. Remember, this is a baseline piece. What are our objectives, and how do they differ? Continue work on draft.

Wednesday, 9/10

The objectives for “Independent Reading and Literary Analysis” are directly related to the Regents examination. This activity is meant to help you review literary terminology with which you are already familiar, learn new literary terms, and apply those terms to your analysis of, and writing about, literature.

IRLA: #1 in set; due upon completion of fifth response. (Use ink, a complete heading on the first page, put each day’s date IN the left-hand margin, and leave in section one of your ring binder until the fifth entry is completed.)

Give me the title, author and number of pages in your novel. Tell me why you selected this book. Tell me your opinion of what you’ve read so far. Do you think you will enjoy reading this novel? Why or why not?

Work Period: Preview “exposition” in Writer’s Inc. (section 419) What is your understanding of the term? Discuss with a partner. Volunteers to share with class?

Work on baseline essay, due tomorrow for workshopping in class.

Thursday, 9/11 Baseline essay draft due.

Mini-lesson: Preview “exposition” in Writer’s Inc. (section 419) What is your understanding of the term? Discuss with a partner. Volunteers to share with class?

IRLA #2: Reread the first three to five pages of your novel and discuss what you believe your author has included as exposition. Why do you need to know these things? What is revealed about the setting in the exposition?

Work Period: Share your essay with a partner. Discuss your personal voice using these guiding questions: 1. How would you describe the overall TONE of the essay? What is the attitude of the author toward his subject? Humorous, serious, introspective (thoughtful)? 2. Where would this essay score on the basic five point rubric? Why? What are the major areas of strength? Areas that need improvement? Revise your essay based on your partner’s feedback. Both drafts due tomorrow. Friday, 9/12

IRLA #3: Review “setting” in Writer’s Inc. How does setting define the intellectual atmosphere (milieu) in your book? What attitudes and beliefs contribute to the action that might be different given a different time and/or place?

Work Period: The week in review—what questions do you have about all of the things we have covered this week? Review the agenda carefully. Is your binder divided and organized? Do you understand all of the IRLA prompts? Are you confident about the quality of your baseline essay?
