Week 3: An Introduction to Scots Law (BEC Lecture Theatre) Yvonne McLaren, Heriot Watt University (An Aberdeen University Law School Graduate, Yvonne is currently based within the Heriot-Watt Management and Languages Department, in the position of Module Co- ordinator for Legal Systems and Method, Commercial Law and Marketing and Consumer Law.)  The History of Scots Law  Scottish Legal Personnel  The Scottish Court Structure  The Sources of Scots Law Week 4: Marketing (BEC Lecture Theatre). Iain Davidson (Iain is an old friend of the School. A former teacher of Business English in this University he now runs a successful training consultancy from his base in the Highlands of Scotland. In addition, Iain is qualified in mountaineering and will be revealing his passion for the wild Highlands in a special talk in our cultural series )  Organisations and the individual  Leadership  Marketing Matters? Essential, practical "Marketing" for Non 'Marketeers'  Tourism: it's an industry, right?  Business on the Edge: Business from the European peripheries

Options (please consult your timetable and see the sign-up list on the noticeboard) English Through Film This is a short course conducted by University Teacher and course tutor Victoria Amador. The course addresses the power of English-language cinema through an exploration of cinema history, genre, and well-known filmmakers. The group will view and discuss selected extracts from films; the tutor will offer some background to the films under discussion. An interesting motif this year will be a consideration of the cultural significance of the remarkable ‘Harry Potter’ phenomenon. Business English Extend and exercise your professional use of English with this interesting course which is a stimulating and useful companion series to the lectures and seminars held throughout the School, and in particular to the series of lectures and tutorials on Marketing in week 4. It is given by our experienced course tutor Rebecca Murray. Presenting in English Workshop classes led by Janet de Vigne, who is a practitioner in media and the Performing Arts as well as a qualified language teacher. This option will feature a number of exercises designed to help you make more fluent and professional presentations in English. These can be business or academic presentations, or any kind of public talk. However, the emphasis will be on the needs of the professional presenter. Janet de Vigne will work on the communicative components of the presentation, including how the speaker appears to the audience and how to make use of technological aids Society and Culture Talks & Visits (see the noticeboard and timetables) The talks are delivered in the after-lunch slot, 1.15-2.15 in the BEC Lecture Theatre . The cultural visits are on Wednesday afternoons, and form part of the social programme – more details available nearer the time. We will all go together by bus from the campus.  "BSL D/deaf or D/deaf BSL or BSL and D/deaf ? " Speaker: Rita McDade (Tuesday, August 18th , 1.15) Rita is a lecturer in British Sign Language in this Department and will discuss political-cultural-social issues from the viewpoint of the signing community.  “Scottish Ceilidh Dancing”, Speaker, Isobel Morrison (Thursday, August 20th , 1.15) Isobel is a former English teacher in this Department. We are delighted to welcome her again with an entertaining, practical explanation of traditional Scottish dancing  “Scottish Folk Music” Speaker: Janet de Vigne. (Monday, August 24th, 1.15)  “Visions of Wilderness” (Tuesday, August 25th , 1.15) Speaker: Iain Davidson

 Cultural visit: The Edinburgh Law Courts, (Wed August 19th, pm)  Cultural visit: Art on the Water of Leith, (Wed August 26th) Along the Water of Leith to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. “An extraordinary collection of modern art acquired by the National Galleries of Scotland and Tate” and showing during this year’s Edinburgh Festival
