I. Course Education and Training is a one-credit course. This course is the Description: prerequisite for all pathways included in the Education and Training cluster. The course is designed for students who are interested in pursuing careers in education. Course content includes the organizational structure of education, careers, the role of the teacher, characteristics of effective teachers, communication skills, the teaching and learning processes, learning styles, research, characteristics of positive classroom environments, human growth and development, curriculum development, student characteristics, teaching techniques, learning activities, educational initiatives, technology, and careers. Observational experiences are a required component of this course.

Career and technical student organizations are integral, co-curricular components of each career and technical education course. These organizations serve as a means to enhance classroom instruction while helping students develop leadership abilities, expand workplace-readiness skills, and broaden opportunities for personal and professional growth.

There are no Prerequisites for this class.

II. Course The program objective is provide students with the content knowledge and Objectives: skills necessary to direct, operate, and teach in an early childhood education program.

1. Apply math, writing, critical-thinking, and problem solving skills effectively in an educational setting. 2. Determine safe, healthy educational settings. 3. Practice goal-setting and teamwork in an educational setting. 4. Interpret Alabama Quality Teaching Standards and the Alabama Code of Ethics. 5. Determine the importance of professional organizations. 6. Analyze the organizational structure, funding sources, history, and current issues in U.S. education. 7. Evaluate the impact of child development on the teaching and learning processes. 8. Critique the roles and effectiveness of faculty and staff in an

Page 1 educational setting. 9. Analyze learning and teaching styles and the steps in the learning process. 10. Practice effective communication skills. 11. Design curricula for student excellence. 12. Use technology to manage documents, communication and data. 13. Analyze careers options in the field of education.

III. Classroom 1. Good attendance is required for an adequate learning Expectations: experience. 2. Be in seat and working on bell ringer when bell sounds. 3. Bring all required materials to class each day. 4. Show respect to all persons (as well as their property) in class. 5. Follow directions the first time they are given. 6. Students who are tardy to class will be assigned to detention that must be served after school the following school day. 7. Student will have 3 days to bring in an excuse for their absence in order to be allowed to get credit for their make-up work. Zeros will be issued for all missed work until the excuse has been approved and the make-up work has been completed. 8. No food and only water in the classroom. 9. Obey all school rules (please refer to the student handbook). 10. Cell phone usage should be limited to that which is required for coursework.

Accommodations: Requests for accommodations for this course or any school event are welcomed from students and parents.

Concerning laptop utilization: 1. Student laptops should not be hard wired to the network or have print capabilities. 2. Use of discs, flash drives, jump drives, or other USB devices will not be allowed on Madison City computers. 3. Neither the teacher, nor the school is responsible for broken, stolen, or lost laptops. 4. Laptops and other electronic devices will be used at the individual discretion of the teacher.

IV. Grading Policy: Test grades will account for 70% of the 9-weeks grade, with the remaining 30% being determined by quiz/daily grades. The grading scale is as follows: A (90-100), B (80-89), C (70-79), D (65-69), and F (below 65). Grades will be a reflection of mastery of the standards. Make sure all absences are excused as class work can be made up and graded for excused

absences only. The Final Exam counts for 1/5 of final grade.
