Curiosity Media Has Built a Highly Interactive Interface with Modern Design to Keep Learners

Fluencia

The team at Curiosity Media runs SpanishDict.com and Fluencia. Since its inception, SpanishDict.com has grown to become the world’s leader in Spanish translation and learning with more than 9 million unique visitors each month. In 2013, the company reached more than 75 million people and has made an impact on learners across the world. Just last fall, the team launched Fluencia, the easiest way to learn Spanish online. In building Fluencia, Curiosity Media set out on a mission to revolutionize language education and allow people to actually speak Spanish. CEO Chris Cummings comes from a background in management consulting at Bain and received a JD/MBA from Harvard. He leads our close-knit team of experts in engineering, design, product, content, and marketing.

Describe your innovative technology and how it solves a real world problem:

By 2050, the U.S. will be the largest Spanish-speaking country in the world. Now it’s more important than ever to speak Spanish. But traditional language education has failed millions of students, leaving them frustrated and unable to communicate. Curiosity Media is passionate about fixing that. To address this need, the company launched Fluencia, the easiest way to learn Spanish online. The product’s approach is unique, as the company has re-imagined the online language learning experience for today's Spanish learner. Fluencia focuses exclusively on Spanish in contrast to language schools and software programs that try to teach 30+ languages with the same model. As a result, Fluencia is able to create a more engaging, customized, and effective learning experience. While the lessons are conversational in focus, the curriculum covers a year's worth of college Spanish and was developed by a team of professors led by the director of Spanish at Georgetown University.

Curiosity Media has built a highly interactive interface with modern design to keep learners engaged. The platform tightly integrates media with the learning process for an immersive experience. Each lesson includes editorially-curated images and audio recorded in a studio by native speakers (who are also professional actors).

On the backend, Fluencia utilizes proprietary technology to boost the effectiveness of each learner's study time. The program’s personalized feedback engine not only tells individuals that they made a mistake, but also tells them how to fix it (like a tutor). This immediate, individualized feedback is unique in the marketplace and tailors the program to each learner's needs. Perhaps the most exciting innovation is Fluencia’s Smart Review™, which integrates spaced repetition, dynamic to each individual learner, to boost long-term retention up to 200 percent. As a result, learners remember more of what they learn in less time. Since launching a few months ago, Fluencia has earned high user engagement and positive feedback from more than 100,000 users in 180 countries.

Fluencia’s earliest learner started studying Spanish with the product for the first time. After 4 months with Fluencia, he was tested on reading, speaking, writing and listening at school. He placed into a class with students who had 6 years of Spanish. Fluencia was developed from the ground up to work on the latest mobile devices and has full-functionality on smartphones, tablets, and computers. Language learning is now accessible anywhere, anytime. Best of all, unlimited access is less than $15 a month, providing much more value than expensive legacy software and ineffective group classes. Boring, expensive, and ineffective learning options have been the status quo in the language learning market. Fluencia is different. It is redefining online language learning by offering a solution that actually works.
