Cooking Merit Badge Schedule and Syllabus

Troop 214 MBI-10 5/22/10 Cooking Merit Badge Schedule and Syllabus

Required Prerequisites Prerequisites are items that MUST be COMPLETED BEFORE the Merit Badge can be taken, unless otherwise stated. Note: the pamphlet is the only official record of requirements. To earn the merit badge, Scouts must complete all requirements in the pamphlet.

Please note that this merit badge requires the planning of 18 meals, and cooking of 9. Thus, we will have to meet several times and will use the day of MBI-10, to do lots of cooking. You will still have to do some cooking outside of class and on campouts. Here is the schedule and requirements outside of MBI classes:

1) Purchase Cooking Merit Badge book at Scout office. Read pages 7 – 20, and 92 – 93. Scan through pages 63 – 91 to get ideas for menus.

2) Meet with Cooking class at Scout Hut at 6 pm, Monday, April 19, 2010. Bring merit badge book, pen and paper. The counselor will bring worksheets for you to use.

3) Read in Cooking merit badge book, pages 49 – 57, and 29 – 47.

4) Meet with Cooking class at Scout Hut at 6 pm on Monday, May 3, 2010. Bring book, pen, paper, and worksheet.

5) Read pages 21 – 27 and 59 – 61.

6) Meet with Cooking class at arranged time on May 18 or 20 (we will decide based on class) at a grocery store (to be determined) to do “Shopping”. Bring pen, paper, and our menu plans.

7) Meet at Merit Badge Day at 8:30 am – 3:30 pm on May 22. Bring book, pen, paper, worksheet, and cooking items to be decided in class.

8) You will need to finish cooking some meals on campouts and at home and bring me a note from an adult, parent or Scout leader, on what you prepared and how it tasted.
