Focus Standard: RL Anchor 9: ...compare the approaches the authors take. Monday: I can identify the themes, topics, and pattern of events in folktales. Shared Reading Genres of Literary Text - Folktale Mini-Lesson Characteristics of folktales: Stories passed down through generation; follows traditional story pattern (problem/solution); central character with either very positive or very negative qualities; has a strong, clear theme. Each type of folktale is unique. Types of folktales include fairy tale, fable, myth, legend, tall tale, and pourquoi (stories that tell why) Strategy for reading folktales: As you read, consider the changes that the main character(s) go through. What is the lesson to be learned? Workshop/Small Group The teacher will complete test review by small group with students using the cold passage reading test from Friday of last week. Students could find the genre of the day in the book basket and write about why it fits the genre, then do independent reading activities, and follow it with self-selected reading

Tuesday: I can identify the theme, topics, and patterns of events in Historical Fiction. Shared Reading Genres of Literary Text – Historical Fiction Mini-Lesson Characteristics of historical fiction: Characters are fictional people. The setting (time, place, events) are REAL HISTORICAL TRUTH. That means you can learn about what happened in history through the eyes of a made up character Strategy for reading historical fiction: Before you read, think about what you know from that time in history. As you read, notice the ways the author makes you feel like you’re a part of the historical event. After you read, think about what new information you learned about that time in history. Workshop/Small Group The teacher will complete test review by small group with students using the cold passage reading test from Friday of last week. Students could find the genre of the day in the book basket and write about why it fits the genre, then do independent reading activities, and follow it with self-selected reading September 16-20 4 th Grade ELA Lesson Plans

Wednesday: I can identify the theme, topics, and patterns of events in Realistic Fiction. Shared Reading Genres of Literary Text – Realistic Fiction Mini-Lesson Characteristics of realistic fiction: Every part of the story is made up by the author (characters, setting, problem/solution). However, every part of the story could happen in real life. Strategy for reading realistic fiction: These stories are all about the character! What does the author do to make these people seem so real? Pay close attention to their words and actions, and the decisions they make as the story progresses! Workshop/Small Group The teacher will complete test review by small group with students using the cold passage reading test from Friday of last week. Students could find the genre of the day in the book basket and write about why it fits the genre, then do independent reading activities, and follow it with self-selected reading

Thursday: I can identify the theme, topics, and patterns of events in Science Fiction. Shared Reading Genres of Literary Text – Science Fiction/Fantasy Mini-Lesson Characteristics of Science Fiction: usually set in the future and heavy on technological advances (think time machines, space travel, etc.) The argument here is that it could possibly happen if we ever got advanced enough – and sometimes explores the question “what if?” Characteristics of Fantasy: involves elements that don’t exist and never will (think dragons, wizards, etc). Lots of connection to folktales – strong characters, good vs. evil Strategy for reading science fiction and fantasy: These authors want you to get lost in their stories. As you read, forget everything around you and visualize every part – make a movie in your head! Workshop/Small Group The teacher will complete test review by small group with students using the cold passage reading test from Friday of last week. the genre, then do independent reading activities, and follow it with self-selected reading

Friday: I can identify the theme, topic and pattern of events in Graphic Novels. Shared Reading Pick one story from the last few genres left. Mini-Lesson Briefly mention the remaining genres. None of these are listed specifically in CCSS, but it would be good for students to be aware of them: Mystery/Suspense: Character(s) seeking the truth, finding clues and interpreting them Strategy: Read like a detective! Don’t be “thrown off the trail”! Adventure: Character(s) thrown into a situation of danger or confusion, overcomes many obstacles on the journey home Strategy: Put yourself in the story. What would you do? How does the author make the character strong enough to survive? Graphic Novels: Could be any genre of story, but relies heavily on the illustration to tell the story (comic-book style) Strategy: Read the pictures as closely as you read the words! Workshop/Small Group The teacher will complete test review by small group with students using the cold passage reading test from Friday of last week.
