Martel Endowment for the Aging Geriatric Nursing Research Scholarship

Since 2005, the Speros Martel Endowment for the Aging has provided funds to support nurses who, as a part of their graduate degrees, are learning to manage the care of indigent elderly individuals. To date, ten graduate-level nursing students have received funding as Martel Research Scholars.

For the coming year, the scholarship will be awarded to one to three nurses whose research focuses on the management of culturally sensitive and high quality care of disadvantaged elderly individuals. The amount of each scholarship will vary by need and by availability of funds; however, most range from $1,500 to $2,500.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

 Currently enrolled in Masters- or Doctoral-level program at the UTHSC-H School of Nursing  Has GPA of at least 3.25 (on 4.0 scale)  Demonstrates an interest in improving health and quality of life for disadvantaged aging population(s) by previous scholastic or professional work  Submitted proposal involves research with an indigent elderly population group.

TIMELINE:

 DECEMBER 1 or next work day at 5:00 pm: Completed Application received by Center on Aging; Late applications will not be reviewed  JANUARY 5 or next work day: Announcement of Awards  SPRING & SUMMER SEMESTER: Funds distributed* *Prior to funding, IRB approval and proof of IRB 101 course completion should be submitted to the COA.

REVIEW PROCESS:

 The COA Scholarship Committee will provide comprehensive review of proposed research and will provide recommendations to the SON Scholarship Committee. The COA Scholarship Committee will be an ad hoc committee composed of the Director of the COA and other representatives as appointed to provide adequate review of research topics.  The final selection of recipients will be made by the SON Scholarship Committee.
