Brighton High School Community Council September 10, 2014– 3:15 pm Minutes

In attendance: Crystal Merrill, Gavin Seal, Amber Shill, Charisse Hilton, Jerry Christensen, Monique Scofield, Tom Williams, Ernest Pulliam, Kelli Buxton, Marise Costa, Julie Clawson, Kathi Newman, Cindy Baker, Lisa Adams, Kim Steenblik, Brenda McCann, Marshelle Shelton, Aaron Hadfield, Lisa Devashrayee, Sam Puich , Mava Day, Michael Flavin, Kodi Gilgen & John Sperry

Welcome: SCC members introduced themselves.

SCC Business: Minutes: Cindy Baker motioned and Mava Day seconded the approval of May meeting minutes; unanimously approved by SCC members.

Meeting Schedule for the 2014-15 was presented.

SCC 2014-15 Leadership: SCC Chair, Kodi Gilgen volunteered and Kim Steenblik seconded. Parent Vice-Chair, Cindy Baker volunteered and Kim Steenblik seconded. Faculty Vice-Chair, Jodi Ide voted in by faculty. Secretary, Crystal Merrill volunteered and Kodi Gilgen seconded. All were voted in by the SCC members.

Sub-committees – signup sheets were passed around for the following: Trust Lands/CSIP, Community Forums/Feeder Schools, Facility upgrades, Above & Beyond Faculty Award, Attendance Policy

Principal’s Report presented by Charisse Hilton  Proposed Cell Tower Budget - Kim Steenblik motioned for approval and Cindy Baker seconded. Unanimously approved by SCC members.  Attendance Policy Update - only difference being the change in the law regarding parents being able to write a note for absences within 5 days. The absence will not accrue ARC points if classified as a "family event".  Arena Scheduling - requesting feedback to improve the process.  Trust land money was used to reduce class sizes in math and English this year. Periods were bought vs. teachers providing more flexibility to fill schedule. The three main areas of focus to be professional development, technology and class size reduction. Half day of Canvas training offered to teachers with 45 attending.  Soccer field update - completion planned for the end of November. Both retaining walls along 2700 east have to be replaced, necessitating a rebid. The new cost of the soccer field is $1.7 million. Drainage has been a major part of discussions. The slope and size of field have also been carefully considered.  Support requested for new turf - would like to have a letter from SCC supporting turf request from district. Marshelle Shelton motioned for approval and Kodi Gilgen seconded. Unanimously approved by SCC members.

Counselor’s report presented by Thomas Williams. They are busy meeting with seniors for their CCR meetings. They will also have freshman CCRs and classroom guidance lessons. Regents scholarship parent night to be held September 17th at 6:30pm in auditorium. School Climate: PTSA Input - In regards to funds, they are at 75% of last year which was 60% down from the year before. Please go online to donate or send a check into office specifically for PTA.

Communication: We are forgoing a Community Forum/Parent Information night for the fall and will look to early spring to host one. There aren't any "hot" topics and a meet the candidate night is available for parents to attend in October @ Jordan High School on October 9th.

Celebrations:  AP Scores: 83%

 6 National Merit Scholars

 9 summer graduates

 3 stat leaders in the state for football: Robbie, Simi and Sione

 All of our fall sports are doing well

 Start of school has gone well, clean halls, respectful, cheery

 In general, happy attitudes even though we are packed!
