Martin 11 Document Path: l:\council\bills\gm\24915cm12.docx 12 13 Introduced in the Senate on February 7, 2012 14 Introduced in the House on February 8, 2012 15 Adopted by the General Assembly on February 8, 2012 16 17 Summary: Gilbert High School Marching Band 18 19 20 HISTORY OF LEGISLATIVE ACTIONS 21 22 Date Body Action Description with journal page number 23 2/7/2012 Senate Introduced, adopted, sent to House ( Senate Journalpage 17) 24 2/8/2012 House Introduced, adopted, returned with concurrence ( House Journalpage 12) 25 26 27 VERSIONS OF THIS BILL 28 29 2/7/2012 30 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 10 11 TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE GILBERT HIGH 12 SCHOOL MARCHING BAND OF LEXINGTON COUNTY FOR 13 A SPECTACULAR PERFORMING SEASON, AND TO 14 CONGRATULATE SCHOOL OFFICIALS, THE DIRECTORS, 15 AND THE BAND FOR CAPTURING THE 2011 SOUTH 16 CAROLINA CLASS AA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE. 17 18 Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly is pleased to learn 19 that the members of the Gilbert High School marching band of 20 Lexington County took top honors at the state competition on 21 October 29, 2011; and 22 23 Whereas, vying against fourteen other qualifying bands in the AA 24 division in this year’s state competition, Gilbert won all three 25 captions: best music performance, best visual performance, and 26 best overall effect, earning a superior rating; and 27 28 Whereas, not since the school’s band won the state title back to 29 back in 1995 and 1996 has the band garnered the state trophy until 30 the 2011 victory; and 31 32 Whereas, after competing all year against bands from much larger 33 schools, the experience paid off when the Gilbert band took first 34 place at the regional competition for the lower state and then again 35 when the band took top honors in the State for only the third time 36 in the school’s history; and 37 38 Whereas, the continuous support of the school administration, the 39 Gilbert Band Booster Club with its loyal board of directors, and 40 dedicated band parents enabled the Gilbert High Indians to lead the 41 tribes at the 2011 state competition; and 42
[1189] 2 1 Whereas, in an arena that demands discipline, practice, and energy, 2 Director of Bands Hunter White and his skilled directing staff used 3 their own musical ability and training to forge a championship 4 marching band and teach these students lessons that will prove 5 invaluable through life both on and off the marching field; and 6 7 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly 8 are grateful for the pride and recognition the Gilbert High School 9 marching band members have brought to their school and their 10 community and look to hear of their continued accomplishments in 11 the days ahead. Now, therefore, 12 13 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives 14 concurring: 15 16 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by 17 this resolution, recognize and commend the Gilbert High School 18 marching band of Lexington County for a spectacular performing 19 season, and congratulate school officials, the directors, and the 20 band for capturing the 2011 South Carolina Class AA State 21 Championship title. 22 23 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 24 Principal Ann O’Cain and Director of Bands Hunter White. 25 XX 26
