Position summary and objective: The Athens County Foundation invests in local strategies to empower Athens County residents and build on strengths of our region, now and for generations to come. We receive, invest, and distribute funds for charitable, cultural, and educational purposes as well as support key leadership initiatives for the benefit of the citizens of Athens and Athens County and is governed by a Board of Trustees. Its objectives are to:

 Build a perpetual endowment fund from which charitable grants will be made at the discretion of the board.  Encourage donors to establish funds in the foundation as a way to achieve their charitable objectives.  Advance philanthropic activities in Athens and Athens County.  Partner other funders on special initiatives.  Nurture, educate and provide leadership in Athens County

The Development Director oversees all of the development activities at the Foundation. Specific duties include interacting with current and prospective donors, assisting with the Foundation’s communication and outreach efforts in coordination with the Executive Director.

Principle Responsibilities  Develops and implements a comprehensive fund raising and implementing the established marketing plan which includes printed material, direct mail, membership drive, special events, proposal writing, major gift, and planned giving components.  Meets with and encourages current and prospective donors to establish funds in the Foundation and/or support the general operating fund as a way to achieve their charitable objectives.  Oversees and implements a marketing and communication plan that creates community awareness of the goals and objectives of the Foundation and enhances the Foundation’s visibility in the community (direct mail, written and electronic publications.)  Assists with the Athens County Foundation social media efforts to disseminate the Foundation’s message, entice donors, manage donations, events and information.  Conducts prospect research.  Manages all donor files and record management.  Works with other staff members in providing guidance to donors and fund holders in their grant making efforts.  Develops and implements strategies that will raise the Foundation’s visibility with professional advisors.  Coordinates donor related events.  Works with Board and CEO to establish current and long-range fundraising goals, strategies and policies and assists in orienting and actively engaging the Board in the annual development plan.  Assists in the development of the Development Committee budget.  Represents Foundation with donors, the financial and legal communities, other foundations. non-profits, local government and the public in matters related to fundraising.  Attends events and disseminates information to staff, Board and other volunteers as necessary.  Encourages donors to enter the Legacy Society.  Staffs the APP and Women’s Fund Advisory Boards.  Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Supervisory responsibilities:

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but may supervise student interns and work study positions.

Position type and expected hours:

This is a part time position with a flexible work schedule of 16-20 per week, which may include. evenings and weekends.

Travel: Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.

Required education and experience:

Bachelor’s degree in business management, nonprofit management, public administration, communications, plus four years of professional related experience, or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Preferred education and experience:

Experience with a nonprofit organization, public service or community focused foundation with/knowledge of fundraising or grant management.
