Colonization Vocabulary

You will make V3 Charts for your vocabulary. Make sure you write the title " Colonization Vocabulary” at the top of your page. These vocabulary charts should be written on notebook paper that you will turn in. Use the format and example below as a guide.

Format: Vocabulary Word Definition Use the word correctly in a sentence and underline it OR draw a picture that represents the word.

Example: Carolina Charter of 1663 A document that granted to the eight Lords Proprietors all of the territory between 31° and 36° north latitude from the Atlantic Coast to the Pacific Ocean, or in effect from about 70 miles south of the border of present-day Florida to about 40 miles south of the present northern boundary of North Carolina.

King Charles II granted the Carolina Charter in 1663.

1. Carolina Charter of 1663 - A document that granted to the eight Lords Proprietors all of the territory between 31° and 36° north latitude from the Atlantic Coast to the Pacific Ocean, or in effect from about 70 miles south of the border of present-day Florida to about 40 miles south of the present northern boundary of North Carolina.

2. proprietor - owner of a business or colony.

3. indentured servant - a person who worked for someone for a period of time in order to pay a debt.

4. Navigation Acts - laws passed by English Parliament in the 1660s that listed which colonial goods would be subject to taxes.

5. Bacon's Rebellion (1676)- a conflict between Jamestown settlers and Virginia governor over land, economic, and political rights.

6. Culpeper's Rebellion (1677-1679) - a political struggle over the control of the Albemarle Sound area that arose after the Lord Proprietors tried to enforce the Navigation Acts.

7. Cary's Rebellion (1711)- a religious and political conflict between the Quakers and Church of England. 8. Tuscarora War (1711-1715)- a war between the Tuscarora and European settlers over land and trade.

9. yeoman - a farmer who tilled the land he or a family member owned.

10. tolerance - willingness to recognize and respect the beliefs or practices of others.

11. royal colony - a colony governed directly by the king.

12. French and Indian War (1754-1763) - a war fought in North America between France and Great Britain over which European kingdom would control North America.

13. backcountry - the land near the coast.

14. Regulator - a backcountry resident who protested the corruption of backcountry officials.

15. militia - a group of citizen soldiers.
