Sleaford men’s tennis - SLEAFORD V PILGRIM HOSPITAL Still without any courts to play home fixtures Sleaford men’s played their 5th match of their 2009 season on Sunday 22nd June with a trip to the Pilgrim Hospital on a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon. All involved in the Club championships and having had some excellent Saturday morning practises these fit and agile men (well Bailey and Wright are) strolled onto court for a 1400 start. Captain Jem Green was able to make a strong selection. The pairs that formed the team were Jeff Mitchell and Lloyd Bailey, Jem Green and Simon Moss and Aidan Wright and Colin Gunning. The first round or rubbers got under way and it was clear from the start that this was going to be a tight match. Bailey and Mitchell defeated the father and son team of Fred and Kit Calvert 6-3, 7-5 and Green and Moss also secured a victory 6-1, 6-3 against Ian Jacquest and David. This was a much closer match than the score line suggests and Green and Moss played their best tennis of the afternoon volleying crisply and hitting some fine passing winners. On the 3rd court Gunning and Wright were also involved in a fine tussle but despite taking the first set 6-3, they lost the second set 0-6 and eventually lost on the final set tie break 10-5. Nonetheless a good performance and Sleaford held a slender 2-1 lead at the end of the first round. The second round again saw Bailey and Mitchell on fine form seeing their opponents off 6-1, 6-3. The Bailey serve proving too strong well supported by Mitchell’s decisive volleying. It was altogether different for Green and Moss who lost their way against Nick Mellor and Mike Jacquest losing the first set 0-6. A much better second set nonetheless still contained too many unforced errors and they eventually lost 5-7 and subsequently the rubber. Gunning and Wright, despite a fine effort, were unable to cope with the heavy top spin serve of Kit Calvert and lost in straight sets. The match was now all square at 3-3 as the final round of rubbers commenced. Bailey and Mitchell, true to form, won their final match securing all of their 3 rubbers with a comfortable win. Gunning and Wright despite some fine foot work (particularly when changing their shoes) lost their final match and so the crowd gathered around the centre court knowing that the result of the Green and Moss v the Calvert’s would decide the fixture. It was an excellent match, both pairs attacking and it was no surprise that the game was tied at 1 set all 3-6, 6-3 and so to the final “penalty shoot out” tie break. It was again a tense affair with the Sleaford pair taking an early lead only to see Pilgrim break back. The pattern was set, a point won here a point lost there until the score reached 8-8. Calvert served to Green’s forehand and Green whipped over a fierce return forcing Calvert into a lob that was too short and an eager Moss rose like a salmon to place an overhead smash unfortunately 6 inches wide of the right hand tram line. Dismayed, Moss won the exclamation of the afternoon award almost stopping the traffic on the nearby A16 and startling residents out for a peaceful afternoon stroll. Calvert served out to win the tie break 10-8 and the match 5 rubbers to 4 leaving Moss to reflect on that last volley

Sleaford mixed tennis – WASHINGBOROUGH
