Percent Composition Lab (Water in Popcorn)

Percent Composition Lab (Water in Popcorn) Procedures: 1. Obtain a beaker and fashion a lid for your beaker from aluminum foil. Mass the empty beaker and lid. Record data. 2. Add about 20 kernels of popcorn to beaker and find the mass of the beaker, lid, and popcorn. Record data. 3. Determine the mass of the popcorn (do this by subtracting the mass of the beaker and lid from the mass of the beaker, lid, and popcorn). Record data. 4. Add enough oil to just cover the kernels. 5. Mass the beaker, lid, popcorn, and oil. Record data. 6. Place the lid snugly on the beaker and pierce the foil with a few small holes. 7. Heat the beaker to pop the corn. 8. Remove from heat and carefully remove lid, let the beaker stand for a few moments to allow the steam to escape. 9. Mass the beaker with lid and popped corn. Record data. 10. Find the mass of the water given off (do this by subtracting the mass of the beaker, lid, and popped corn from the mass of the beaker, lid, oil, and corn). 11. Find the percent water in the original kernels (do this by dividing the mass of the water given off by the initial mass of popcorn kernels and multiply by 100). Record data. 12. DO NOT EAT popcorn. Throw away popcorn and thoroughly clean and dry your beaker and workstation.

Data Table 1 Mass of beaker + lid 2 Mass of beaker + lid + popcorn kernels 3 Mass of popcorn kernels (#2-#1)

4 Mass of beaker + lid + popcorn kernels + oil 5 Mass of beaker + lid + popped corn + oil

6 Mass of water in popcorn (#4-#5) 7 Mass of water in popcorn (#6/#3 X 100)
