Presbyterian Women DEBORAH CIRCLE will meet Tuesday, January 11th at 9:30 a.m. at the church. Deacon’s Corner Hostesses will be Pauline Johnson and Next meeting January 10, 2011 @ Vivian Rootes. Devotions will be given by 6:00 p.m. Olga Morrison. All women of the church are welcome to join us for religious study, mission work, coffee, and fellowship.

Safety Tips For Walking On Ice And Snow Particularly for those who are not accustomed to wintery weather conditions of ice and snow, below are some helpful hints that will reduce the risk of falling when slippery conditions exist:

 Wear boots or overshoes of rubber or neoprene composite to provide traction on snow and ice. Avoid walking in shoes that have high heels, smooth plastic soles, or leather soles, which increase the risk of slipping.

 Use special care when entering and exiting vehicles; use the vehicle for support. Step – don’t jump from vehicles or equipment.

 Walk consciously. Be alert to the possibility that you could quickly slip on an unseen patch of ice. Test potentially slick areas by tapping your foot on them.

 Avoid the temptation to run or hurry.

 Walk cautiously. Your arms help keep you balanced, so keep hands out of pockets and avoid carrying or swinging heavy loads that may cause you to become off balance.

 Place your full attention on walking. Digging in your pocketbook or backpack while walking on ice is dangerous.

 Walk “small”. Avoid an erect, marching posture.

 Look to see ahead of where you step; a sidewalk completely covered with ice may require travel along its grassy edge for traction.

 Take short, shuffling steps, curl your toes under and walk as flatfooted as possible, keeping your center of gravity directly over the feet as much as possible.

 Don’t step on uneven surfaces. Avoid curbs with ice on them.

 Finally, when entering buildings, remove snow and water from footwear to prevent creating wet slippery conditions indoors. It takes less than two seconds from the moment you slip until you hit the ground, leaving little time to react. If you know you are going to fall, try to reduce your potential injury by the following:

 Relax as much as possible when you begin to fall.

 Roll with the fall. Try to twist and roll backwards, rather than falling forward.

 Bend your back and head forward if your feet shoot out from under you so you don’t slam your head on the pavement.

 Toss the load you are carrying. Protect yourself instead of the objects being carried.

 If you fall, avoid trying to break the fall with a hand. Fall with sequential contacts at your thigh, hip, and shoulder to avoid using your arms or hands.
