Course Description: “An introduction to factors affecting individual and community health and wellness.”

Objectives  Understanding Fitness and Wellness.  Making Personal Wellness Choices.  Preventing Cardiovascular Disease.  Cardiorespiratory Endurance: Assessment and Prescription.  Improving Flexibility  Improving Muscular Strength and Endurance.  Nutrition, Health, and Fitness.  Exercise, Diet, and Weight Control.  Stress Management.  Reducing Your Risk of Cancer.  Avoiding Substance Use, Abuse, and Addiction.  Reducing Your Risk of Sexually Transmitted Infections.  Maintaining Lifelong Fitness and Wellness.

Grading The final grade will be based on an accumulation of points in the following scoring areas. See the Intro PowerPoint for more information regarding grading.

Points Scoring Areas 60 points - Quizzes (instructions and individual due dates are posted on GeorgiaView) 40 points - Assignment (instructions and individual due dates are posted on GeorgiaView) 100 points - Comprehensive Final Exam (see the class webpage for more information) 75 points - Research Paper (see the class webpage for more information) 25 points - Online Discussion Points (see the class webpage for more information) 300 points - Total Points Possible

Grading Scale Calculating your grade throughout the semester. A - 270 points or more Divide the points that you have earned by the total possible - 240 to 269 points points you could have earned at the time. That will give you a percentage. D - 180 to 209 points Ex. 87 (points earned) divided by 120 (possible points at the F - below 180 points time) = 72.5% (C average)

Notes Class Attendance: It is recommended that all students attend the first class meeting. This meeting will be on campus and during the first week of the semester. (See the class webpage – the first class meeting will be listed on this page.) The final exam will be giving on campus, the instructor will announce the date, time, and place on the course webpage.

Technical Requirements: GeorgiaView Vista, students will be required to use this for class discussion, as well as take quizzes and turn in assignments. The instructor will use Microsoft Office to post course info for the class; Microsoft Expression Web, Word, etc. The research paper must be submitted through Gordon College email in an updated Word format.

Email: Students will be required to contact the instructor using the Gordon College email. The instructor will not correspond with students regarding this class through any off campus email or GAView email.

Missed Assignments, Quizzes, Exam, or Research Paper: There will be no makeup opportunities for missed assignments, quizzes, or research paper. This is an online course and the student is responsible for completing all assignments, quizzes, or research paper before the deadlines. Do not wait until the last minute/day to complete assignments, quizzes, or research paper. This could lead to problems and you will be held accountable for your procrastination. You will receive no points for missed assignments, quizzes, or research paper. This includes all assignments, quizzes, or research paper. Missed Exam: Students will be notified well in advance regarding the time and date of the final exam. It will be the student’s responsibility to be available for this exam. If you are absent for the final exam you will need to bring documentation supporting your reason of absences to the instructor within 4 days of the absence, and prior notification to the instructor of this absence and reason for absence is highly recommended. If you can not present the instructor with a valid reason supported by the documentation of your absence within 4 days of the absence you will not be allowed to make up the exam and you will receive a zero.
