SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

SECONDARY DISCIPLINE STUDIES AND CURRICULUM AREAS AND CODES – 2017 Information for Bachelor of Education students Bachelor of Education students need to complete a minimum of four subjects (known as a Sub-major or Minor) in a “curriculum area”.

Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) registration requirements state that different teaching methods require different numbers of subjects. Major: A total of 6 subjects, two subjects at 1st Year level, and a minimum of two subjects at 3rd Year level. Sub-Major or Minor: A total of 4 subjects with no more than two subjects at 1st Year level. Part: In most programs, this equates to two subjects (Science and Humanities curriculum areas only).

Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Students will be trained as secondary teachers with a major and a minor specialisation to be selected from the following discipline areas: English, Mathematics, Humanities (including History, Geography, Business and Commerce), Science (including Physics, Chemistry and Biology), Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL/ESL), Physical Education (PE), Health Education, Visual Arts, Drama, and Psychology. There are special conditions for the discipline specialisations in Science, Humanities and Physical Education. If you choose PE as a specialisation it must be a major and comprises a total of 8 subjects. In the two elective options in first year you must choose subjects in ONE discipline area. This will be the first year of your major discipline study. For 2nd and subsequent year level subject choices you will need to go to the relevant section of the University’s Undergraduate Handbook to search for subjects to complete your discipline studies.
