JOB SPECIFICATION

COORDINATOR - NEW ART WEST MIDLANDS

Context

This freelance position will support the co-ordination of New Art West Midlands (formerly Turning Point West Midlands), the West Midland's regional visual arts network and part of the national Contemporary Visual Arts Network (CVAN). New Art West Midlands works with artists, curators, public and independent visual arts organisations, and Higher Education Institutions to promote the region's contemporary visuals arts and develop a strong regional visual arts network. It is led by Birmingham City University and supported by a range of funders and partners including Arts Council England.

Key Accountabilities

To assist the Director of New Art West Midlands (NAWM) in coordinating the NAWM 2016- 18 programme and West Midlands contemporary visual arts network. To support regional delivery partner(s) in the coordination and delivery of NAWM's Professional Development Programme for artists and curators based in the region. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND OUTPUTS

NAWM Network and Management:  To support the Director of NAWM in planning regular network meetings for the NAWM executive and advisory groups

 To be a strong advocate for the development of contemporary visual arts in the West Midlands region, working with the Director and Chair of NAWM in planning related events which promote and strengthen the network

 To support the Director in establishing new branding for the retitled ‘New Art West Midlands’ (formerly Turning Point West Midlands)

 To co-ordinate appropriate marketing materials (print and web) for each activity strand, where relevant, and liaise with marketing and PR consultants or officers at the relevant delivery partner organisations.

 To support the Director in evaluating NAWM programmes, compiling data for funding and performance reports to present to the Chair NAWM and wider Executive Group, as well as key stakeholders including Birmingham City University and Arts Council England

 To assist the Director and Chair in seeking sponsorship and external income for the New Art West Midlands programme

 To be aware at all times of the implications of diversity for the arts, and to promote a diverse perspective in all activities undertaken

 To work within Birmingham City University’s regulatory, policy, systems and procedural framework at all times

NAWM Website and Social Media:  To support the Director in the development of a new NAWM website under the new branding, liaising with web designers, developing web content, commission new critical writing and collating/editing content from regional partners

 To produce regular NAWM e-bulletins for circulation to the wider network, and manage regular website news updates

 To set up online systems to receive artist/curator proposals and applications, where relevant to NAWM’s programme for 2016-18

 To manage social media for NAWM and liaise with regional partners on joint marketing and communications.

Artist and Curator Professional Development Programme:

 To project coordinate and promote NAWM’s Professional Development Programme for artists and curators in the region, in close liaison with the nominated lead delivery partners – to be confirmed.

 To work with delivery partners (visual arts organisations and HE partners) in designing such a programme which will meet the development needs of both artists and curators including: workshops, business development sessions, artist and curator talks, visits to art fairs, mentoring training in promoting and selling works and codes of best practice, artist residencies, curator studio visits and bursaries.

 To co-ordinate contracts (for example: speaker’s contracts, artist bursaries, and liaise with and manage artists and curators) involved with NAWM's professional development programme

 To work with delivery partners in evaluating the various elements of the Programme

 To manage and monitor the budget for this Professional Development Programme

PERSON SPECIFICATION:  First degree in a relevant subject

 A strong knowledge of and passion for the West Midlands contemporary visuals arts sector

 Ability to manage budgets and oversee payments and grant claims

 Strong project management and coordination skills

 Excellent writing and editing skills, including experience of writing information for public consumption, including newsletters, web blogs, press releases

 Excellent verbal skills with the ability to communicate with a wide range of individuals including artists, curators, higher education institutions, arts organisations and funders

 Knowledge and experience of website management and social media

 Experience of planning and organising artist and/or curatorial development events

 Experience of database management
