Week 17 Newsletter- Grade 2 (December 18th – December 22nd)

This Past Week’s Events

We would like to thank all of the parents who were able to attend our classrooms for observation week. We hope you were pleased with the teaching instruction and learning environment you have experienced this week. Remember, we are open to any comments and suggestions you have to help improve students’ learning.

This week, the grade two students have worked to complete the unit Community Helpers on the Scene. The students have reviewed the unit using the grammar and new words they have learned. They also worked on a cumulative task which described many different community helpers we discussed throughout the unit.

Next Week’s Expectations

Next week, we will be starting a new unit Healthy Habits. Our first topic to be covered is Brushing Teeth. The students will learn details about oral hygiene along with the key terms and social conventions that go along with the topic. We will start introducing verb tenses to enhance students’ daily speaking and writing.

Under the Key Words, our verbs this week end in –ING. This mean the action is a continuing action. Students will be supported in using this verb form and the helping verbs that usually go together with it.

Example #1. I was brushing my teeth. (WAS is the helping verb. This action is continuing in the past.)

Example #2. I am brushing my teeth. (AM is the helping verb. This action is continuing in the present.)

You will notice that the examples under the Social Conventions section incorporates the contractions with apostrophes (…’s), which students have been practising over the last few weeks. We encourage students to continue to practise this grammar point.

In addition, students will become more familiar with the common Possessive Adjectives, such as my, your, his, her, and their. Students will be supported to use these words to describe the nouns in the sentence.

Example #1. This is their toothpaste. (THEIR describes who the toothpaste belongs to.) Key Words

Reading Records

The grade 2 teachers are noticing that students are reading more Raz-Kids books which is a great improvement compared to the beginning of the school year. Please keep in mind that the children should be recording each book that they read so their teacher can listen to the recordings and track the students’ reading progress. Only after reading and recording the book then should parents sign the Reading Records sheet. Please note that only 5 books total can be listed on the Reading Record sheet each week.

Weekend Recount of Events

The students have had a great start with the weekend recount homework (diary entry). The teachers have noticed reoccurring mistakes in writing in past tense. This will be an ongoing focus commencing next week. Teachers are making corrections in the students’ books, however it is recommended that parents reinforce the corrections in their child’s work.

Please remember that there are no classes on December 29th, 2017, and January 1st, 2018.

本週,二年級學生努力的完成「社群工作者 這個單元。學生們藉由學習文法及在課堂中學過的新字彙來複習這個單元。同時我們也 在製作一個期末總結學習成果作品,那是我們在這個單元中討論過的,一個描述許多 社會上不同協助者的作業。

開始新的單元: 「健康的習慣 ,我們的第一個主題是刷牙。學生會藉由主題用語、主要相關句型,來學習口腔衛生的 細節。我們會開始介紹動詞時態,以加強學生的日常口說及寫作。

在主題字彙下面,動詞字彙會以 ing 為結尾。這代表是一個正在進行的動作。我們會協 助學生運用這個動詞形式,及學習經常與其一起使用的輔助動詞。

例子#1. 我那時正在刷牙。

(WAS 是輔助的動詞。這個動作表示過去正在進行。)

例子#2. 我正在刷牙。

(AM 是輔助的動詞。這個動作表示現在正在進行。)

您會注意到,在主要相關句型下的例子會使用縮寫符號(…’s)的縮寫式,這是最近幾週 學生們一直在練習的,我們鼓勵學生繼續練習這個文法。

閱讀錄音: 二年級的老師注意到,比較起本學年的一開始,學生閱讀更多的 Raz-Kids 書籍,這是一 個很大的進步。請提醒您的孩子錄下他們選擇的每本 Raz-Kids 書籍,老師們才能夠聆 聽並追蹤學生們的閱讀進度。並只有在閱讀完和錄製完該書籍,家長才能在閱讀錄音單 上簽名。請注意,每週至多只能有五本書列在閱讀錄音單上。

回顧式週末作業 : 學生們對於回顧式週末作業有一個很好的開始(日記)。老師們注意到學生在使用過去式 時一再犯的錯誤。此部分會是下週開始持續關注的重點。老師們會在學生的作業本中批 改,然而我們建議家長可以協助孩子加強作業中被改正的部分。

請記得 2017 年 12 月 29 號和 2018 年 1 月 1 號並不用上課。
