Please check all that apply: Graded______S/U (cannot be applied toward the BME degree)______Tissue Engineering Minor _____

This form must be completed for BME students that intend to use an independent study/research course to fulfill the requirement for a technical elective in the B.S. in Biomedical Engineering degree program. The form should be completed by both the student and the instructor or mentor supervising the independent study/research. The information provided in this form will be used by the BME Undergraduate Affairs Committee to evaluate whether or not the independent study contains engineering topics necessary to fulfill a technical elective requirement. Engineering topics include instruction in engineering analysis, engineering design, experience in the scientific method, technical writing, etc.

A student must complete on average at least nine hours of independent research each week of the semester for successful completion of the 3 credit hour course. The student and instructor will make arrangements as to how this time commitment is evaluated. The student must present the work in a public scientific forum such as the NCSU Undergraduate Research Symposium. The student must also write a technical paper describing the research in detail. NCSU Instructors: please confirm by initialing below, that a graded copy of the technical paper will be sent to the BME Undergraduate Office.

Return the completed form to the BME Program Assistant, Lesley Hubbard, in 4014 EB3 for evaluation by the BME Undergraduate

Thank you very much for taking the time to complete this form.

1. On an attached page, write a detailed description of the planned project. Please clearly explain:  Engineering content, e.g., a device will be built, data will be modeled, data will be compared to an analytical solution developed by the student, forces will be analyzed, etc. Please include the course number that taught the original engineering concepts, e.g. MAE214, BME210, TE466, etc.  Responsibilities of the mentor and responsibilities of the student  If the student will develop all or part of the experimental protocol  Any tools, devices or processes that the student will develop 2. (for the mentor) Provide a description below of the basis for evaluating the work.

A written technical report demonstrating engineering content is required when an independent study course will be used to satisfy the technical elective requirement. Confirm that a written report will be required and graded and that a graded copy will be sent to the BME Undergraduate Office (Lesley Hubbard, 4014 EB3). YES ______N O ______Continued The independent study will contribute to which of the following (not all may apply). At least 3 of the gray outcomes must be addressed by the project in a substantial way.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES YES NO DESCRIBE THIS PORTION OF THE PROJECT (a) The student will apply their knowledge of engineering to design a research plan.

(b) The student will design and conduct experiments and complete analysis of the experimental data.

(c) The student will design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs

(d) The student will work on a multi-disciplinary team

(e) The focus will be on identifying and formulating an engineering problem.

(f) The student will examine the ethical and professional impact of the proposed project.

(g) The student will complete a written paper in journal format in addition to making a presentation at the Undergraduate Research Symposium. (h) While preparing for their presentations, the student will be required to address the impact of their work in a larger context. (i) Due to the nature of the project, the student will do a lot of learning on their own and will develop skills and appreciation for lifelong learning. (j) The project will be conducted in areas of current biomedical engineering research. (k) The student will learn to use laboratory equipment needed for the completion of the research project.
