Florence Unified School District #1 June 2012 Board Report Dr. Amy Fuller, Assistant Superintendent for Instructional and Bilingual Services
May 2012 May is our busiest month of the year as everything comes to a conclusion. It’s rewarding to see the accomplishments of so many students; their growth and maturity; and how they have increased in knowledge and experience. This is the month we’re invited to attend all sports, music, dance, academic and all kinds of events. It’s truly an honor to be a part of FUSD and see such metamorphosis take place.
Poston Butte High School (PBHS) Honors/Awards ceremony I attended the PBHS Honor’s/Awards ceremony. It was rewarding to see students who have worked very hard to obtain scholarships and honors. The three Arizona Universities, ASU, NAU, and U of A were well represented and gave our students a lot of money. Other colleges and universities were very generous too. PBHS obtained about half million dollars in scholarships for their students.
Florence High School (FHS) Honors/Awards ceremony FHS has more history doing this wonderful program. The gym was full of parents and there were hundreds of students recognized for all kinds of accomplishments. FHS obtained over one and a half million dollars in scholarships for their students. There was nothing but pride flowing around as all recognitions took place.
Kinder and 8 th grade Promotions I had the honor to attend Magma Ranch K-8 for Kinder and 8th grade promotions. Both of them were tastefully decorated. Attendance was outstanding and students did a great job making every one proud. Again, the gym was full of pride as each name was called and presented with a diploma. Both promotions were well prepared and students felt cared for and valued.
Poston Butte High School (PBHS) and Florence High School (FHS) Graduations This was the first PBHS graduation and the football field was dressed in gala. As the 295 graduating students appeared, Board members, parents, teachers, administrators, and community members, were beaming with pride. It was a great event.
FHS graduation was a class act. Students shared some of the best talks I’ve heard. They were well behaved and proud to be the class of 2012. The support from Board members, faculty, staff, and community members was evident. The thunder from the fireworks was an echo of the thunder the students have left in our hearts.
I reflected upon both graduations: this is why we do what we do to see those incredible young students go to higher grounds, to see them succeed in life. It’s truly an honor.
