Social Studies Test Review

The test will be split into two parts on 2 days. The first part will focus on ‘Part A and B’ of the review below, and the second part will focus on ‘Part B.’ Please study the review well, along with the other handouts this review is asking you to look at. All of these should allow you to study diligently for the test.

Part A: Please study the 5 themes of geography well. There will be close to 20 questions appearing in this section that deal with the 5 themes in questions similar to the ones given below. All questions will be in multiple choice format.

PART B: This section will focus on the different types of maps we have studied. Please make sure you know the description of each type of map, and know how it looks.

1. Describe the features of a political map. • On political maps you see the borders between countries, states, provinces. • Names will be written all over the map. Name: ______Date: ______

• You don’t really see the names of physical features, unless they are very important for that area (ie. Large bodies of water) • Different colors make it easier to understand the map.

2. Describe the features of a physical map. • You can see the different physical features that each country, area, or continent has. – Example: mountains, bodies of water, elevation. • Physical Maps have the names of countries, important cities, as well as names of the important physical features the map is illustrating.

3. Describe the features of a thematic map and give 2 examples of thematic maps. • These are used to show a lot of different information in a way that is easy to understand. • Examples of thematic maps include: – Climate – Population – Agriculture – Vegetation – Different cultures Draw examples of the 3 types of maps we have covered so far (political, physical, thematic).

PART D: MAPPING. This section will test your knowledge of mapping (latitude and longitude). You can review your mapping (latitude/longitude) worksheet that is in your binder to practice. Please know where the regions below are on a globe.

1. Where is the equator located on the globe? O degrees latitude, running from east to west

2. Where is the prime meridian located on the globe? 0 degrees longitude, running from north to south

3. What direction do longitude lines go? North to south

4. What direction do latitude lines go? East to west
