Orienteering Team Discussion (The who, what, when, where and how of the Best Practice, e.g., components of the function, organization (staff responsibilities, command and control), resources needed (money, people, supplies, transportation, and equipment) timeline from planning to completion, etc.):
Our Orienteering Team, more than our other teams, is primarily led by our cadets. Our Raider Commander with the assistance of a few other experienced cadets, teach our cadets all aspects of orienteering. The flow of events in our county consists of a Raider Challenge in the fall (Nov) which has a map reading part, but no compass course requirements. This works well because as we prepare our cadets for the Raider Challenge we are getting the map reading portion out of the way, and so when it comes time to work on the compass portion, we have more time. In map reading, we use not only the curriculum provided, but also use old test and Army manuals. Once we start of the compass portion, we first start with the basics of the compass and pace count, and focus on techniques to work as a team. We used a GPS that the program purchased initially to set up a course around the school grounds for cadets to practice. We make sure we have points that are close to each other either by azimuth or distance to emphasize the importance to being precise and not just fast. Now, there are Apps for the Iphone that are much easier to use than the GPS. Scoring for our Orienteering Competition consists of the total test scores for the entire 3 member team, added to the number of correct points (x 25 points each) found. The only reason time will be considered is in the event of a tie. As we mentioned above, our practices mirror the fact that precision is more important than speed.
