Dear Parents:

Wow, the school year is moving swiftly, and I am excited about the great things that are continuing to happen in and out of our school. You should have received your child’s 3rd quarter Progress Report last Thursday, February 26th. It is my hope that you have had meaningful discussion with your child about his academics and behavior performance. Parents, I need your support in reinforcing the importance of your child coming to school ready to learn, being respectful, and an active participant in and out of class.

I am thrilled to announce that Ms. Scott, 4th grade teacher, is our 2014-2015 Teacher of the Year. Ms. Scott is deserving of this honor for her commitment of over 12 years of teaching at Reid Park Academy. Daily in her classroom, students experience authentic learning and engaging lessons that are rigorously planned to impact teaching and learning. She is a model educator, who is committed to her students, the school, and her profession.

Congratulations to our PTO for their 1st Annual Sweetheart Ball that took place Saturday, February 28th. We had over 50 dads and 100 girls in attendance. Additionally, our PTO Cookie Dough fundraiser was a success! We collected over $8,000 and will profit approximately $3,000. Tentatively the pickup day for the fundraiser is Thursday, March12th, from 3:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Today, we celebrated Read Across America Day. Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2nd, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss. As you already know, motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers. Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school. Please make sure that your child is reading daily and practicing fluency, improving comprehension, and writing about what he or she is reading. Parents, this should be an expectation for your middle school child as well. All parents should know their child’s reading level and grade level expectations for middle and end of year: Middle of Year End of Year Grade K C D Grade 1 G-H J-K Grade 2 L M-N Grade 3 O P-Q Grade 4 R-S S-T Grade 5 T-U U Grade 6 U X Grades 7-8 Y Z If you have not been communicated to by your child’s teacher regarding his or her reading level and progress, I encourage you to schedule a meeting as soon as possible to ensure that your child is making steady progress with the most important skill in life--- being able to read!
