The Central Illinois Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is sponsoring a five-day Mental Health First Aid Train the Trainers course in Bloomington, Illinois, April 11-15, 2016. Mental Health First Aid is an in-person training that teaches you how to offer help to people developing a mental illness or in a mental health crisis. We are looking for up to 30 people to become Trainers in their organizations and communities. There are still spaces left for this 40 hour course. Certified trainers must teach three or more courses per year. McLean County trainers will find support through the Mental Health First Aid Collaborative. The cost is $1800, which is $200 less than the current course cost across the country. The McLean County Community Compact spring membership meeting will take place on April 12, 2016, from 3:30 – 5:00 pm. The meeting will be held at Heartland Community College in CCB 1406. During the meeting our main theme will be “Launching the McLean County 60 x 25 Project.” The 60 x 25 project, sometimes called Goal 2025, relates to a national goal of having 65% of the adult population holding, at minimum, a 2 year degree or other high-quality post-secondary credential by the year 2025. In addition to learning about this initiative, we will hear updates from previously endorsed projects and have the opportunity to mingle with education, business and community leaders. Habitat for Humanity McLean County is hosting a Habitat Women Build Lowe’s Clinic - Join us for a free “How-To” Clinic at Lowe’s (2101 East Empire Street Bloomington) on Tuesday, April 26. Free Smoke Alarms - The American Red Cross, Bloomington Fire Department, and Normal Fire Department will be hosting a free smoke alarm installation event as a part of the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign. Call 844-319-6560 and press “9” or schedule an install at www.getasmokealarm.org. Smoke alarms will be installed in Bloomington-Normal on Saturday, April 2nd between 10 am and 2 pm. Pratt Music Foundation Music Lesson Scholarships: Do you know a student who would benefit from private music lessons for piano and strings but who is restricted by finances? The Pratt Music Foundation’s mission is to provide talented youth an opportunity to enhance their musical ability through private lessons. Music lessons are expensive and simply not an option for some children and families: this is where the Pratt Music Foundation comes in. The Foundation grants full music lesson scholarships to the Illinois Wesleyan University Music Preparatory Program. Instruction is available in piano or strings (violin, viola, cello). Music scholarships are awarded to area students in grades 2nd through 12th each spring, and are based on financial need, motivation, and talent. Applications are due by June 1. Each scholarship covers one school year of instruction, starting in the fall (2016-2017) and includes summer lessons (2017). Free music books are supplied from the Music Shoppe. From Home Sweet Home - We are excited to announce that we completed our first Faith & Finances Facilitator Training in December. We now have a few more certified Faith and Finances Facilitators in Central Illinois. We are looking forward to holding our second training event to equip local pastors, lay leaders and community leaders to enable the wide spread use of the Faith & Finances curriculum in our area. The class consists of a 4 week online course followed by a Friday/Saturday live training event. The online class will start April 11th and end on May 11th. The Live Training Event will take place on May 20th-21st. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this curriculum, Faith & Finances provides a biblical vision of the healing power of Jesus at work in our relationships and our finances. This curriculum is specifically designed for those who might say “I don’t need this course ‘cause I don’t have any money to spare.” Faith & Finances is also a great tool for those who are just starting out with managing their money. This curriculum may only be taught by a certified facilitator.

Children may sign up for 10 minute reading sessions with a Certified Therapy Dog. Bring your favorite book or grab one from the shelf to share! Making Homemade Baby Food- Making your own baby food can be easy, inexpensive, environmentally friendly and nutritious. You’ll learn what foods to introduce, safe preparation and storage tips, and proper feeding strategies. Plus, you’ll watch a demonstration on making baby food and take home a packet of recipes. Illinois Food Service Sanitation Manager’s Certification Course- This course meets the eight-hour coursework and examination required by the State of Illinois for the Food Service Sanitation Manager’s Certification. It will be held April 13 from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. and April 15 from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at Heartland Community College. You must attend both days to sit for the examination. A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls - Many older adults experience concerns about falling and restrict their activities. A Matter of Balance is an award-winning program designed to manage falls and increase activity levels. Goals of the program include: viewing falls as controllable, setting goals for increasing activity; making changes to reduce fall risks at home; and exercising to increase strength and balance. WHO should attend: anyone concerned about falling; anyone interested in improving flexibility and balance; anyone who has fallen in the past; and anyone who has restricted activities because of falling concerns. Human Service Council Intern Showcase - The Human Service Council is hosting an intern showcase. The Human Service Council consists of social service providers in McLean County who meet monthly to share information, provide support and develop professionally. We meet the 2nd Tuesday of every month at LifeCIL 2201 Eastland Drive. Social Work interns are invited to attend the Human Service Council April meeting on Tuesday April 12th 12:00- 1:00. You will be asked to share a 5-7 minute presentation about your internship experience at your agency. Social Service providers are encouraged to come out and welcome new professionals to the field and share employment and volunteer opportunities at your agency. Interns- Please feel free to bring your resume or portfolio with you to the meeting. Social Service professionals- please bring business cards and information about your agency. REGISTER FOR YWCA BABYSITTING CLINIC - The YWCA Babysitting Clinic offers training in basic safety, first aid, emergency procedures, age-appropriate activities, and tips for acquiring clients. Training is provided, in part, by guest speakers from the McLean County Health Department, YWCA Stepping Stones staff, YWCA infant teachers, as well as “Introduction to Babysitting” videos. Participants must be 11 years old. Cost for two-day clinic is $40. Certification is awarded to those who complete all sessions and pass a test. Early registration is encouraged as class size is limited. The Babysitting clinic will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 22 and 23 from 1-5 pm at the YWCA McLean County. The WINGS Award was established to encourage women in professional and personal development through mentoring and financial support and is sponsored by past recipients of the YWCA Women of Distinction Award. These women have a shared commitment to give something back to other women in our community. Because of their generosity, the award is given annually to a Woman to Improve her skills for a Notable purpose which allows her to Grow professionally and to achieve Success. A woman is eligible for the WINGS Award who demonstrates her commitment to professional and personal growth and to service in McLean County. Past WINGS Award winners are not eligible to apply. Please note that a woman applying for the WINGS Award may not be a nominee for the YWCA Women of Distinction Award. A WINGS Award of up to $1,500 will be granted to a recipient (or recipients) for a future endeavor that helps a woman grow professionally and personally. Research Survey for Non-Profit Executive Directors and CEOs-
Sabrina Burkiewicz, a former staffer with Home Sweet Home and graduate student at ISU, is looking for non- profit organizations to take her research survey. Her thesis project examines non-profit leadership and how certain leader behaviors can strengthen the non-profits they lead. She is looking for the leaders of local non- profit organizations to take the online survey. This research can benefit local non- profit leaders because the research findings may demonstrate that non- profit leaders have unique needs, and how certain leadership behaviors may help them increase volunteers and donors. If your organization uses volunteers, accepts financial donations, and has a primary leader like an executive director, CEO, or president, and you would like to take the survey and be part of her research, please contact Sabrina at [email protected] or 309-846-6935. Upon request, Sabrina will share the research results when the project is complete, this summer. The research should show which leader behaviors can have the greatest positive impact on your non-profit organization.
United Way of McLean County seeking volunteer award nominees! United Way will hold its third annual Rock the Block in Uptown Normal on April 23 to celebrate volunteerism in the community. The American Red Cross in partnership with the Bloomington and Normal Fire Departments is seeking volunteers to help install free smoke alarms in Bloomington Normal on Saturday, April 2, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Volunteers will work in teams of three installing free smoke alarms and sharing home fire preparedness information with residents. Volunteer- Be Someone's Hero. Become A Mentor. Big Brothers Big Sisters is currently in search of volunteers for our mentoring programs. Community-Based Mentoring is the traditional BBBS relationship. It's a few hours 2-4 times a month filled with shared interest and activities like shooting hoops, visiting a museum, sharing pizza, taking a walk, fishing, attending a sporting event, or just hanging out and talking. Through School-Based Mentoring, Bigs and Littles meet once a week during the school year. Activities take place during the school day, over lunch or during the student's study hall period. They may spend time talking, playing a game, doing a craft project, or any other fun activity within the school setting that will promote the positive development of their relationship.
