New Teacher Boot Camp Ideas Topic Description Achievement Series This web-based program allows teachers to create standards-based assessments. Teachers will set up their classes and write a test using an existing item bank. Teachers will also be able to take a test as a student and view the results. 6 + 1 Writing Traits The 6+1 Writing Traits model provides teachers and students with a common vocabulary to discuss the qualities of their writing. This session will provide teachers with an overview of the 6+1 traits as well as ideas for teaching students the essence behind each trait. Instructional Strategies with Technology An overview of some of Marzano’s Instructional Strategies with technology integration ideas on how to increase student achievement and raise their level of engagement by using some of the technologies they know and find exciting. Curriculum Mapping and TechPaths The failure to plan is a plan to fail! This session will give provide the background knowledge of the “why” in curriculum mapping and will get exposure to the “how” by using the web-based software, TechPaths. A good start to planning a great year! DIBELS Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills are measures designed to quickly and efficiently assess reading and pre-reading skills in Kindergarten through Sixth Grade.This 6 hour session will provide training to classroom teachers on how to administer and score each of the DIBELS measures. DRA The Developmental Reading Assessment provides a method for assessing and documenting primary students’ development as readers over time. The DRA determines the independent reading level of students. Teachers will learn how to administer the DRA to students in grades K-3 in this session. Framework for Understanding Poverty People in poverty face challenges virtually unknown to those in middle class or wealth. Resources will be provided that can help improve effectiveness in working with people from all socioeconomic backgrounds. Classroom Management Strategies Effective teachers know that problem behavior and poor discipline are the greatest obstacles to achievement. Learn strategies that encourage and support best behavior practices. Differentiated Instruction This session will provide an overview of the components of Differentiated Instruction. Participants will develop an understanding of the importance of formative assessment for planning purposes and be provided with strategies to differentiate based on student learning styles. Literacy Strategies Content area texts require various skills and practice in order for students to make sense and understanding from the reading. Several instructional tools will be provided to enhance students’ use of strategies while reading content area text. RtI and PBIS South Dakota is in its 2nd year of piloting Response to Intervention and Positive Behavior Supports. This session will be an overview of both programs and how they work together. We will discuss identifying deficits in both behavior and academics, implementing interventions and monitoring progress for improvement. Formative Assessment Assessment doesn’t end (or begin) with testing. Time will be spent investigating various assessment methods for student learning and growth.
