Summer Academy Leader/Tutor TRIO Upward Bound College Prep Program Fort Lewis College Position Summary FLC’s TRIO Upward Bound College Prep Program (UB) seeks Leaders to supervise and tutor high school students during our summer residential college preparatory program. UB provides year-round academic and enrichment activities to 50 high school students who come from low-income families where neither parent has earned a bachelor’s degree. The program offers a summer residential component focused on enhancing the academic skills of the participants and provides participants with fast-paced, intensive academic coursework and other social, cultural and recreational enrichment activities. These are summer live-in, full-time/temporary positions scheduled from June 2-July 7, 2016 (approximately five weeks). Weekends are off but leaders must report back to work on Sunday evening at 6:00pm (for student check in). The Leader position provides experiential learning opportunities for college students wishing to gain practical experience working with youth in academic and social development. TRIO Upward Bound is not just a summer job; it is a commitment to educational equity and an extension of our service to the community. Leaders cannot be enrolled in FLC summer sessions II-V, and are discouraged from holding other jobs outside the TRIO Upward Bound Summer Academy when the UB students are on campus (Sunday nights through Friday afternoons, June 2-July 7, 2016). This position reports directly to the Leader Supervisor. Compensation: $9.00 per hour (approximately 40-50 hours per week), plus room and evening meal. Required Qualifications Minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 Completed at least two years of college Campus resident for least two semesters or equivalent Valid State Driver’s license with clean driving record Experience working with high school students Preferred Qualifications Tutoring experience in Math, English, Science, or Foreign Language (Spanish). Experience with conflict resolution. Experience coordinating and supervising group living experiences in team-focused work environment Have effective oral and written communication skills. Possess strong organization skills. Must have high level of maturity, be self-disciplined, and able to work successfully on a team. Previous TRIO Program experience. Familiarity with college residence hall policies and procedures. Must be sensitive, respectful and understanding of needs of economically and academically disadvantaged, ethnically diverse high school students. Must possess the commitment and stamina to participate constructively in stressful situations. Duties Develop positive and supportive relationships with TRIO Upward Bound students, mentoring them on academic, personal, social, and college/career concerns. Assist in establishing and maintaining a positive and safe environment in the TRIO UB residence hall for students and staff, creating an atmosphere that appreciates the diverse cultures, traditions, lifestyles, and beliefs of all students. Lead group study sessions, including tutoring and teaching study skills necessary for college success. Take primary responsibility for students in his/her group, by monitoring academic, personal and social progress and updating other staff as necessary. Lead and/or participate in free-time and structured evening activities. Conduct Friday morning wake up calls. Conduct evening lights out rounds in the residence hall Monday-Thursday and Sunday provide supervisory coverage as needed. Transport students to and from work experience sites and field trips in FLC vans as necessary. Maintain appropriate, professional boundaries with students. Maintain student confidentiality as appropriate. Handle and/or refer student disciplinary issues, crises and personal issues to appropriate staff, and make recommendations for responses based on behavioral concerns. Assist with summer food service program and compliance. Assist in monitoring students’ arrival on Sundays and departure on Fridays. Lead and/or accompany students on day field trips. Coordinate with full-time staff and attend all staff meetings. Maintain program rules and expectations. Assist in maintaining safety and security in residence hall, including taking responsibility for FLC and UB property. Perform other tasks as assigned by Leader Supervisor and Program Director.
Work Schedule Your contractual obligation is to live six days per week for five weeks (approximately 45 hours per week) in the residence hall (June 2-July 7, 2016) and includes the following: o Participation in three-day leader training prior to student arrival (June 2-5, 2016) o Daily Work hours: . Sunday: 6:00-11:00PM (student check in, evening activities, lights out, room checks, nightly staff meeting) . Monday through Thursday: 4:00pm until 11:00PM (free time, dinner, study hall, evening activities, lights out, room checks, nightly staff meeting) . Friday: 7am-5pm (breakfast, work experience, lunch, fieldtrip, checkout) . Leaders are on call during early morning hours.
