PART B: Long Answers

1. Describe why a computer is called a digital device.

Because it uses discrete values for data representation. Commonly this is binary, which is a discrete number system consisting of 0 or 1

2. Conversion between binary and decimal, decimal and binary a. Convert the decimal number ( 45 ) to binary 101101

b. Convert the binary number ( 0101110 ) to decimal 46

3. If I want to buy a hard drive with 22 GBs (gigabytes) on it, a. How many bits can be stored on it? 176 billlion bits = 176,000,000,000

b. An ASCII character uses 8 bits. How many characters can fit on the hard drive? 176,000,000,000 / 8 = 22,000,000,000 = 22 billion characters

c. A UNICODE characters uses 16 bits. How many characters can fit onto the drive?

176,000,000,000 / 16 = 11,000,000,000 = 11 billion characters

4. List at least four (4) components that you might find on a motherboard. (Example, CPU)

PCI Expansion slots, PCI expansion cards, ISA expansion slots, AGP expansion slot, CPU fan, batteries, microprocessor, RAM, ROM, CMOS, Cache, transistors, capacitors 5. The processor uses a special programming language to run programs. This is called the instruction set architecture and might also be called assembly language. One popular assembly language is called MIPS. Use the Internet to find four (4) instructions that are used in MIPS and describe what they do.

6. Describe three types of memory the processor might use to run programs.

Cache, RAM, Virtual Memory. It dubiously uses ROM, although I accepted that without issue. The real answers is Cache, RAM, and Virtual Memory which exists on the hard drive. You could have also included registers in the ALU for a correct answer

7. Imagine that you just bought a new computer, but when you try to open a lot of programs at the same time, the computer runs very slow. The processor is a new Pentium Pro, so you doubt the processor is the cause of the slowness. What might be the problem, and how could you solve it?

You need to buy more RAM. It is doubtful that buying RDRAM over SDRAM would make that big a difference in speed

8. Pretend that you are responsible for all the computers in your office. Also imagine that you need to upgrade their storage, because the company has a lot of new data to store. You don’t have very much money to spend, but the people at the office do not mind waiting for slow devices because they play solitaire all day. Argue what might be the best solution for your company using the four key issues with storage (versatility, durability, speed, capacity).

I wanted you to pick a storage medium, like hard drive, floppy drives, cd roms, dvd roms and explain why that is a good choice for the situation describe above.

If I picked hard drives, I would then say, hard drives are versatile because it is easy to add more and they can be easily put into new computers. They are durable, because as long as they are kept in good maintenance, they will last for like 10 years. They are not the fastest storage solution, but they are good enough for the slow people at the office. Their capacity is also very large, which outweighs any loss of speed. Hard drives are also relatively inexpensive for the amount of data they can store.

9. What does a screen resolution of 1024x768 mean?

Means there are 1024 pixels going horizontal and 768 pixels going down the screen. The total pixels on the screen would be 1024 * 768 = 786,432 pixels

PART C: Practical Session

1. Use the Microsoft Templates to help you create a “Resume.” A resume is also known as a C.V. (Curriculum Vitae). It is a list of things that you have done and accomplished that relate to work and school. Also change the “Theme” of the resume by going to Format  Theme and selecting a “professional looking” theme. PRACTICAL

PART D: Practical Session

There are two unrelated parts in this assignment. You must attempt both using any version of Excel. You must specify which version of Excel you use to complete your assignment on your cover page.

PART1 Sione Fifita works for the real estate agent, Coconuts Land Sales, Vaha’akolo Rd, Nuku’alofa. To compare housing prices in different areas of the country, he has collected data on the average prices of existing homes in the main four regional areas. Follow the directions below to complete the desired worksheet. a. Start Excel to create a new workbook. Click on Sheet 1 and rename it as Coconut Land Sales.

Save the workbook as IS or CS XXXXXXX Real Estate Prices where IS or CS XXXXXXX is your ID number, there is no need to type in the file extension ".xls". The software itself in this case MS Excel automatically appends this. b. Edit the title in cell B3 so that the first letter of each word is uppercase. Center the title across columns A through G. Increase the font size to 14 and bold and apply a font color of your choice to the title. c. Center-align and underline the column headings in row 5. Right-align cells B7 through E10. Left-align cells A7 through A10. Best-fit column A. d. Calculate the Tonga average for 2007 in cell F7 by summing the four regional averages in the row and dividing by 4. Be careful not to include the year row headings in your calculation. Copy the formula to the other two years in cells F8 and F9. e. Next calculate the percent of increase from 2007 to 2008 and from 2008 to 2009. Enter the formula = (F8-F7)/F8 in cell G8. Format the formula as a percentage with two decimal places. Copy the formula to G9. f. To calculate the 2010 projected average price enter =B9+B9*((B9-B8)/B9) in cell B10. Copy the formula to cells C10 through F10. Copy the formula in G9 to G10. g. Format all the prices as Accounting with zero decimal places. Increase the width of columns B through F to 10. Best-fit column G. h. Delete row 6 and insert another blank row below the title.

i. Add fill colors to the worksheet as you like.

j. Look for a picture of a house either in the Clip Art Gallery or from the Internet. Insert the house image, size and position it to fit nicely on the space left of the title.

k. Create a custom footer, click on Print Preview/Setup/Header and Footer/Custom Footer. Fill in the following: Left Section - Your name and your student ID on the next line; Centre Section - Date and time and separated by "<>"; Right Section - file name with worksheet name below.

l. Save your workbook.

PART 2 Amelia Maile is the financial assistant for Havelu Hardware. She is preparing a budgeted income statement for the first quarter (January through March). Follow the instructions below to complete the desired worksheet. a. Start Excel and open a new workbook. Save the workbook as IS or CS XXXXXXX Havelu Hardware. IS or CS XXXXXXX again is your ID number. Rename Sheet1 as budgeted income. Enter the following information below:
