The Boundary Committee for England is a committee of The Electoral Commission, an independent body set up by Parliament under the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000. The functions of the Local Government Commission for England were transferred to The Electoral Commission and its Boundary Committee on 1 April 2002 by the Local Government Commission for England (Transfer of Functions) Order 2001 (SI 2001 No. 3692). The Order also transferred to The Electoral Commission the functions of the Secretary of State in relation to taking decisions on recommendations for changes to local authority electoral arrangements and implementing them. -

Ailsworth Village
Chapter 9 Ailsworth Village Early History Ailsworth has evolved over the years from a small farming community to a modern village where agriculture is no longer the focus of village life. Aerial and field surveys have revealed evidence of prehistoric and Roman settlements in the surrounding area. The Roman market town of Durobrivae, to the South of the River Nene, was a thriving market and industrial area. Rich villas, farmsteads and pottery kilns were scattered along the Nene Valley and it is assumed that Ailsworth developed from one of these farmsteads. This was a time of change in the countryside; the Romans brought new crops and farming methods and organisation to the land. Ermine Street and King Street, which both run through the parish, were built as part of the network of military roads leading out of London. After the retreat of the Romans, the prosperity of the area declined and the villas and farmsteads were neglected, the land reverting to heath and scrub. The Roman roads remained in use long after the collapse of the Empire and were used as parish boundaries. The Saxons did not settle along the old roads but built their homes half a mile or so away. During the 7th century Ailsworth was part of the Kingdom of Mercia that was ruled by the last pagan king, Penda. He was killed in 654 and succeeded by Fig 9a. Planning (Listed Buildings & Conservation Areas) Act 1990. The purpose of conservation area designation is to retain the special character and appearance of an area and to bring forward measures to enhance its appearance and historic interest. Designation demonstrates a commitment to positive action. The local planning authority is required to periodically review its conservation areas. A character appraisal is a way of identifying the key features that define the special interest of an area and proposals for enhancement. It is important that all those who have an interest in the conservation area are aware of those elements that must be preserved or enhanced. This report assesses the historic and architectural qualities of Ailsworth, sets a measurable 2007 benchmark for future monitoring and makes recommendations for the management of the area over the next 10-15 years to ensure its special character, historic fabric and appearance are retained and enhanced. -

PETERBOROUGH THURSDAY WALKERS SUMMER 2019 Some members have requested the occasional shorter walk as an alternative on Thursday afternoons. Not all locations are suitable for this, but some are being offered in this programme on a trial basis. The symbol of three boots (���) denotes these walks, which are listed immediately after the full walk on the same date. The starting point will be the same for both walks, and the same principles apply as for the full-length walks. Please tell us what you think about their success (or failure), so that we can do some further planning in the future if required.
