UNIVERSITY SELECTION: 2010/2011 INTAKE FOR GENERIC CANDIDATES

Mzuzu University is pleased to announce names of generic candidates selected to begin studies in various programmes for the 2010/2011 Academic Year.

Selection Criteria

The process of selecting the successful candidates was based on the Malawi Government’s policy of equitable system for admitting students to public universities on Government scholarship. Under this policy, each district was offered ten places on merit for the best candidates qualifying for entry into various programmes. The rest of the candidates were selected based on both merit and population ratios of districts of origin. Mzuzu University used the candidates’ performance at Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent as the academic basis for merit ranking of candidates.

In 2010, a total of 11,172 candidates applied for admission into the University (8,168 males and 3,004 females representing 73% and 27% respectively). Out of these applicants 9,217 qualified for entry into the programmes they had applied for while 1,955 did not qualify. From the candidates that qualified, 532 have been selected to study in various programmes at Mzuzu University, of the selected ones 368 are males while 164 are females, representing 69% and 31% respectively. This press release excludes candidates that have been selected into the Nursing and Midwifery programme.

Opening Date

The selected candidates should report at the University campus on Sunday 2nd January, 2011 for orientation, registration and commencement of classes.

Candidates will be required to pay the following fees per academic year: i. On-campus Students Tuition : K24,284.20 Board and Lodge : K27,333.40 Registration : K 2,091.10 Medical : K 557.70 Student Union : K 100.00 Caution : K 633.60 TOTAL : K55,000.00 ii. Off-campus Students Tuition : K24,284.20 Board : K 3,333.40 Registration : K 2,091.10 Medical : K 557.70 Student Union : K 100.00 Caution : K 633.60 TOTAL : K31, 000.00 iii. Research Supervision: This is determined by the respective faculties and candidates will be advised accordingly when registering for their research project.

Fees must be paid in full or in two equal instalments at the beginning of each of each semester, except for caution and student union fees which have to be paid once at the beginning of the first registration.

Stationery and other Requirements

Students will provide their own stationery. Different programmes have different requirements for candidates registering in those programmes. Details of such requirements will be communicated to successful candidates by respective faculties on registration.

Original Certificates and Passport-size Photographs

All candidates are required to bring original copies of their academic certificates and two passport size photos for registration.

Admission Letters

The University is sending admission letters to each of the selected candidates, stating the terms and conditions of

14 admission. Also enclosed in a letter of admission will be a package containing an acceptance letter and a medical form that should be completed with a medical practitioner.

Candidates who had applied for admission to Mzuzu University during the 2010/2011 admissions and have not been selected under Government scholarship as published, may wish to express their interest to be considered for admission under the self-sponsored category on the terms and conditions detailed in a separate advertisement inviting applications for expression of interest for admission into this category.
