Halloween/Suspense Narrative Assignment

Suspense Narrative Assignment Writing Strand

As we’ve learned in class, building a suspenseful story requires clear description and slow building to the climax. It’s now your turn to create your own “Suspenseful Tale”. In no longer than two pages typed and no less than one page typed, you are to create a suspenseful narrative that will send “chills” up the reader’s spine.

We will be creating this narrative in “chunks” (e.g., Introduction; Rising Action/Climax; Declining Action/Conclusion). After each section your work will be edited by a peer and you will edit a peer’s work. Before you begin writing you will also be expected to create a Story Web/Mind Map (as modelled in class) that will help to organize your thoughts and your narrative.

Learning Goal:  To create a fictional, suspense narrative that includes: an Introduction, Rising Action, Climax, Declining Action, and Conclusion.  To organize a fictional narrative so that it is easy to understand.

Success Criteria: 1. Story: /4 Marks – The story contains all the components of a narrative writing piece (e.g., Introduction, Rising Action, Climax, Declining Action/Denouement, and Conclusion)?

/4 Marks – There is a description of the setting using appropriate adjectives and literary devices?

/4 Marks – There is a problem/crisis that your characters must overcome?

/4 Marks – The “Declining Action” flows well into your conclusion and that conclusion gives resolution to the story, or uses a “cliff-hanger” that may lead to a sequel?

/4 Marks - Literary devices are used to help tell the story (e.g., foreshadowing, metaphors, and similes)?
