Pictures of You Lesson (Based on “Pictures of You” Episode Airing 2/7/07, One Tree Hill)
Class Intro Discussion: Can one class change your life? How long does it take to change a life? Pick one word to describe yourself Pick one word to describe how your classmates see you Pick one word to describe others based on list of 5 Universal Stereotypes (Jock, Geek, Loner, Homecoming Queen, ______) – is it fair to reduce to this? Do people see us for who we truly are? Are we afraid they don’t? Do we want them to? It is important that you know who you really are and how you want the world to see you. It is possible to reinvent yourself, or change how you present yourself to others. Half of class – names on slips – other half of class – draw names Pair up and spread out – Real world doesn’t care who we were in High School. What’s important is that we figure out who we really are and who others really are. Find out if 50 minutes can really matter – change how you see others or how others see you. (After time with partner): What did you learn about that person in 50 minutes? Can one class period make a difference?
Partner Instructions: (Respect the privacy of this conversation – what is shared by your partner should not be repeated!) Share something personal with your partner. If you were an inanimate object, what would it be and why? If you could live in a different country and/or time period, where/when would it be and why? What is your favorite song/movie and why? What is something you are most proud of and why? What is the most important thing in your life, honestly? Lighten up. Do an impression of a celebrity or famous character. What’s one thing about how other people see you that is not true? That is true, but that you don’t like? What do you like most about yourself? Admit something that worries you, or something you’re afraid of. What/where/who to you want to be in 10 years? Your next task is to take an artistic self-portrait that portrays you as you TRULY are – discuss possibilities with your partner – help each other come up with ideas – imagine that this is going to be put into a time capsule to be opened 100 years from now and you want it to capture your ESSENCE! Complete the picture- taking task on your own time by next week. Partner Instructions: (Respect the privacy of this conversation – what is shared by your partner should not be repeated!)
